Is Nirvana a Christian Band?

soo nirvana is one of my fave bands....but my mom got mad at me for liking them and took away my phone and ipod...lol that was like only for a day tho. anyway my mom says to not like them cuz cobain killed himself then she said would jesus listen to that music and im like yeahh and she got all mad. im gonna like them no matter what my mom says....i mean she lets me listen to eminem!!!! but not freakin nirvana!! well actually she only lets me listen to eminem a little but i always listen to his songs.... what do yall think of nirvana?

Love Nirvana, but feel soooooo old when I see teens who weren't yet even born when Cobain shot himself, in Nirvana shirts He's like the Jim Morrison for Generation X's successors.

So listening to Nirvana is a no-no for your mom because Cobain killed himself, but Eminem with all his lyrics concerning killing is wife, mother, etc. is alright? Yeah, I'd agree that your mom is too uptight about this. I'm not sure why your mom thinks that taking away your phone is going to lead to you not liking certain bands in the first place.

At first I thought she was going to have issues with some of their lyrics. Not letting you listen to a band because the singer killed himself is pretty silly. Not to mention that Eminem is about 10x more obscene than Nirvana. So you guys are going to have to work this out.

Nirvana was good but they are a bit overrated, in my opinion. I use to listen to them a lot back in the day but most of the popular songs I can't even stand to hear anymore because they were so overplayed.

Nirvana is pretty good in my book, and slightly over rated in my books. Outta that group, Dave Grohl was the musical genius in my opinion, as evidenced by his ability to do awesome at pretty much everything he touches. Had Cobain not killed himself (by shooting himself AND taking roughly 7x the lethal dosage of heroin), Nirvana probably would have split with Grohl emerging as a songwriter.

As for having beef with them, I'd have more understanding if your mom was upset about the drug loving lifestyle Cobain was promoting...which still wouldn't make sense, if she's ok with you listening to Eminem, who doesn't exactly promote a clean lifestyle either.

andd my mom doesnt know much of nirvanas songs... she know smells like teen spirit lithium and all apologies and i think thats it....well actually the only song she can recognize is teen spirit.... im gonna tell her that kurt didnt kill himself and someone else did it because theres alot of proof that he got murdered...

I've read that site before, and in all honesty, if it was correct, love would be behind bars.

The Cobain suicide being a murder is an interesting conspiracy, but is as factual as the Tupac Lives conspiracy.

Eh your mom is being slightly paranoid over this but what momma don't know don't hurt her. Nirvana is relatively benign compared to Emenim or some of the others. To each their own. Honestly you have access to the net and even if it had a block on it nothing a proxy to youtube won't solve good hunting. If you like them, try out some of the other grungish bands around that time, I really recommend alice in chains or acidbath. course the latter is a bit harder and darker.

not to get off topic but well the american justice system isn't always as efficient as it could be especially when you have money that's all I will say.

yesterday i asked my mom to listen to a song on youtube...it was nirvanas cover of the man who sold the world, i really like there cover of it...anyway i told my mom to listen to it and when she heard it she just gave me this look like are u forreal? and i just smiled and i was like kurt was mudered momm and she was like all mad then she was like what would jesus do and im like wooooww. shes saying that im obssesed with them and im like no im not momm....even tho i know i am. and i went to the library with my grandma 2 days ago and got the book called kurt cobain it is very interesting...i just hope my mom doesnt find out i have the book..well its like what is she gonna do? shes just gonna give another lecture and take away my ipod. whateverrr

As for the Pixies, they're quite different, but have some wicked stuff as well.

[The Theory]

There's a couple of issues at play here.
1. Yeah, there seems to be a discrepancy not letting you listen to Nirvana, but allowing Eminem.
2. Does that matter? Whether or not you like it, Mom's word is law even when it doesn't make sense.
3. You don't help your case by digging up "proof" on the internet that contradicts Mom. You can find "facts" to prove anything you want to on the internet--no one is going to fall for that and just makes you look disingenuous.

I notice your fifteen. I was about the same age as you were when I discovered them for myself. I became quite the fan. I bought every album and owned a few books as well. I hero worshiped Kurt Cobain until I realized how human and flawed he was. I still enjoy their music very much but I no longer idolize them.

I always liked Alice in Chains way better than Nirvana- and I adore the Pixies above them all. I'm actually going to see the Pixies in November. I was in high school when those bands were in the first time around. Of course- if we're talking about bands from that era that I liked better than Nirvana (and Alice in Chains)- I'd also have to tell you to check out Soundgarden and Smashing Pumpkins (saw them in a little hole in the wall before they became super popular). My love of Chris Cornell's voice has still not abated after all these years. I got heartily sick of Pearl Jam- I simply can't listen to any of their songs these days.

I actually can see how someone might find Alice in Chains scary. Their harmony was a bit on the eerie side and some of their songs do have rather anti-Christian lyrics. This actually brings me to your post regarding your mother not letting you listen to Nirvana (as Cobain killed himself). My parents didn't want me listening to Alice in Chains and Guns 'n Roses as they disapproved of the lyrics. All that did was have me covertly listening to those groups anyway- and making tapes off of my friends' CDs.

My advice: Don't undermine your mom. Talk to her rationally about it though. Provide evidence to back up your point regarding lyrics. It may really boil down to the fact that your mom doesn't like Nirvana and just doesn't want to have to listen to them because you're playing it around her. I would hate it if I had to be subjected to music I just didn't like on a regular basis.
