...have a crush on an anime character?

If there was ever a question in my life that has puzzled me, it has to be this one.

For one thing, I've had a crush on this character for almost four years now. Sure I've had "normal" human crushes in between, but for some reason I can't get this anime person out of my head from time to time. I suppose one can say that this is a "fan" thing, especially when you find your favorite anime character to be the model for the girl-of-your-dreams (I'm a guy BTW.)

Is it wrong to have feelings for a character? Am I going to Hell for liking something that isn't real?

I've seen mazagines in stores that advertise anime women in bikinis, skimpy clothes, etc. I guess the people who put this stuff out there figure it's not real people, so they think it's okay. But it evokes real emotions for some guys. It's not good to lust after anything, "real" or not.
And you don't go to Hell for sinning unless you're not saved.
I agree with Jacques, stay away from anime for a while, maybe it'll pass.

Sure! I've had the biggest love-crush on a boy *coughKenIchijouji* for the past 4 years now. Basically, if you can love a real person's face, then you can love his photo. If you can love his photo, you can love his drawing.

My friend is in love with Elijah Wood...literally. So much that she is not open to any other guy. It's scary, cuz she's losing touch with reality
@_@ me too...... *drool* he is so hot. =D

Finding an anime girl attractive (i.e. hot, cute, kawaii, if I were an anime she would be hot) with the understanding that she isn't real is one thing. having a crush on one is another. thats like drawing a picture and having a crush on the picture. They are not real. having a crush on someone is desiring a romantic relationship with them. you cannot have a relationship with an inanimate object or picture or anything that isn't real.

i have found anime girls and video game girls attractive/cute/hot. but i understand that they are not real. you need to evaluate what you feel for them (is it a crush or is it just a "wow-she's-cute" feeling?) If it is a crush, you need to realise that anime is NOT real.

I don't think it's wrong in a sinful way unless you desire their physical form, which would be pretty weird because it's a drawing. I would suggest staying away from anime for a while - as the others have - and also finding a meaningful human relationship and committing yourself to that, although not necessarily - but potentially - a girlfriend (as you're a guy).

This brings up another fun question: is desiring a physical form a sin when it is just a drawing???

As for the question at hand... I don't think its really THAT bad to have a crush on an anime character since I don't think its really the drawing you have a crush on. More like the fantasy picture of the perfect girl that the anime character helped create.

I've heard of girls (though it does happen to guys too) that have had crushes on the same rockstar for over 5 years. They never liked the REAL person but the image they had created of him.

I do think that it will pass as all crushes do but don't really know how to speed that up... not watching anime for a while is probably good advice... out of sight out of mind as they say.

Well, I don't think you really need to stop watching all anime, just stop the show that has the person in it. Another thing that I'd like to point out is, when I get a crush on an anime guy (I'm a girl) it's usually for his personallity, oh and his looks don't hurt, but the crush never lasts, and when the show is done airing, or I haven't seen it in awhile I lose all feelings for the person. Looking back, I'll wonder why I had a crush on the guy, but still think he's hot. I usually make a certain opinion of the certain guy, and once I forget about it, then the crush's over.

Me too. I don't go around lusting after their bodies or nothing, I just get little butterflies when they talk is all.... *blush* But I suppose it's probably not all that healthy =3

Well it's hard not to be attracted to fictional characters, after all, they're almost always written to embody noble characteristics, love of freedom, kindness, bravery, and so on. It's no more sinful to feel a few butterflies in your stomach than loathing all the villains out there written to embody the deplorable characteristics.

Elijah Wood? Frodo? But he's so...short. Seriously though, Frodo, for example he voluntarily shouldered a great evil (that nearly destroyed him) and undertook a perilous quest (that nearly destroyed him) to rid the world of evil and save, not just humanity, but all life. I myself, were I a Gondorian, would give him a hug and kiss his cheek if I ran across him, I'd probably ask if he'd deign to honor me by allowing me to purchase him dinner, come to think of it.

Ditto with Tenchi, how can you not adore and admire someone who saved the world?

I would say that a "crush" on an animated drawing is perfectly allright. In fact, I would say that a crush on an animation or a character in a novel is a good deal healtheir then a crush on a real person - a movie star or a musician.

An animation is obvously not real, and therefore will not really interfere with real-life romance.

The onscrean (or onstage) persona of a performer is just as false, but in the throes of a crush you forget that, and you pine over your idol and don't pay attention to real love in real life.

I like the way you put that.

Pop icons and stars that we see every day are only a front that they put out to make themselves look good (most of the time). I don't see that having a crush on an anime girl is any worse than having a crush on some actress or female singer.

That being said, I'm not a fan of having more than a passing interest in celebs. No matter how good she looks, or acts, or sings, it's pointless to wish that you could be with them.

I suppose that if it's just one of those "I really wish I could find a girl exactly like her", it's no big deal. But if you are comparing every girl you meet to this anime chick and summarily rejecting them because they aren't exactly the same, you probably should at least watch less anime, if not take a break from it alltogether for a while.

No, of course not. No one chooses to have a crush. It just happens.

There's no such thing as Hell, so "no". ;)

No, of course not. No one chooses to have a crush. It just happens.

This is partially true, however it is also dangerously misleading. Apart from being totally false, the idea that we cannot control or at least curb our emotions leads to the justification of rape, adulter, assault and murder "I couldn't help it, it was my emotions".
There's no such thing as Hell, so "no".

Right, because we're all just a bunch of junk floating in space, a bunch of lifeless dirt that evolved out of nothing. Right.
