Well...HeatherJay...I know you have good intentions and well, that's kewl. But, that particular book is different because it has witchcraft in it. I think creepy, mysterious books are different, unless of course it has witchcraft in it. [Also...just a thought: uh, Stephen King doesn't normally let a witch or wizard triumph as good...as does Harry Potter...] However, again, that wasn't exactly the point of this thread...

Well, although I have never read any of his books I've been told their horror kind of stuff, sounds kinda dark to me lol! I'm not the sort of person who can handle REALLY absolute terrifying, twisted kind of stuff but I'm intrigued to know more! It sounds interesting the way you described it JesusFreak. Is it really dark stuff though?
Anyway, tell me more hehe! But I really don't see it a problem you reading something you enjoy. May not be some peoples cup of tea but you love it so read it! God wouldn't stop you if you enjoyed it -you're not breaking any laws! Well, enjoy your books

God Bless x x

It really depends on what book you read. he writes everything from horror, thriller to sentimental. Have you ever seen a film called Stand By Me starring river Phoenix? That's based on a Stephen King and it's about the loss being labeled because of your family...kind of a story of redemption but also loss of innocence of youth when we enter teens.

The Shawshank Redemption. A man wrongly accused of murder who is also a banking genius. processes his warden's illicit money untill he realises there is evidence which will free him. Things don't go that easily and Andy eventually escapes and uses his knowledge of the financial system to give himsefl a new identity-not even remotely scary/bloody. This short story was also made into one of the most critically acclaimed movies ever made.

The Green Mile: Again someone wrongly accused of murder. Only this man had extraordinary healing powers. The guard of death row knows John Coffey is innocent (check the initials....not all King's work ignores Jesus) but he has no choice but to execute him. (Christians will associate the initialls of the gentle healer conedmned to die to another more than familiar story!)

But then, a lot of King's work is quite dark and ocassionaly explores the depth of the human mind. Books like Misery, IT and The Shining have all been made into films and in my opinion are probably the most disturbing.

If you are looking for good films made from the books I recommend King's own version of the Shining (NOT Kubrick's version...his is so different from the book But King's one is very very long. Good though) The Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption or Stand By Me. Stand by Me is probably the least extreme. Some swearing but that's about it.

Also if you want to delve right into reading king, Try Pet Semetary. Basically about vampires in a small town called Salem's Lot but it's quite mild. Needful Things is also a good read-how the devel can corrupt us by giving us the thing we most desire.

King's work is far deeper than just a horror story. I think the people who criticism him for being unoriginal haven't read enough of his work to realise just how diverse he really is.

Has anyone ever read any of King's book when he writes as Richard Bachman? I have the Bachman books but I can't believe people at the time didn't know it was King is disguise! his writing style and settings are identical to his other books.

I imagine people don't like the general content and language. But people are dead set against Harry Potter. IMO I think Harry Potter's far milder that SK. But, SK is acceptable and HP isn't. Hmmm.....

I think it's just a conflict of bible and life. I mean, in the 50s, rock n roll was satanic. Then rock n roll was ok in the 60s and the beatles were satanic. Tne the beatles were acceptable and heavy metal is satanic.... you see the pattern? In 10 years time, people will laugh about thinking HP and SK are harmful, because something far, far worse will be popular.
