The question of whether a Christian should listen to secular music is one that many Christians struggle with. There are many secular musicians who are immensely talented. Secular music can be very entertaining. There are many secular songs that have catchy melodies, thoughtful insights, and positive messages. In determining whether or not a Christian should listen to secular music, there are three primary factors to consider: (1) the purpose of music, (2) the style of music, and (3) the content of the lyrics.

(1) The purpose of music. Is music designed solely for worship, or did God also intend music to be soothing and/or entertaining? The most famous musician in the Bible, King David, primarily used music for the purpose of worshipping God (see Psalm 4:1; 6:1; 54:1; 55:1; 61:1; 67:1; 76:1). However, when King Saul was tormented by evil spirits, he would call on David to play the harp in order to soothe him (1 Samuel 16:14-23). The Israelites also used musical instruments to warn of danger (Nehemiah 4:20) and to surprise their enemies (Judges 7:16-22). In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul instructs Christians to encourage one another with music: “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs” (Ephesians 5:19). So, while the primary purpose of music does seem to be worship, the Bible definitely allows music to be used for other purposes.

(2) The style of music. Sadly, the issue of music styles can be very divisive among Christians. There are Christians who adamantly demand that no musical instruments be used. There are Christians who only desire to sing the “old faithful” hymns. There are Christians who want more upbeat and contemporary music. There are Christians who claim to worship best in a “rock concert” type of environment. Instead of recognizing these differences as personal preferences and cultural distinctions, some Christians declare their preferred style of music to be the only “biblical” one, and declare all other forms of music as ungodly at best or at worst, satanic.

The Bible nowhere condemns any particular style of music. The Bible nowhere declares any form of musical instrument to be ungodly. The Bible mentions numerous kinds of string instruments and wind instruments. While the Bible does not specifically mention drums, it does mention other percussion instruments (Psalm 68:25; Ezra 3:10). Nearly all of the forms of modern music are variations and/or combinations of the same types of musical instruments, played at different speeds or with heightened emphasis. There is no biblical basis to declare any particular style of music to be ungodly or outside of God’s will.

(3) The content of the lyrics. Since neither the purpose of music nor the style of music are determinant as to whether a Christian should listen to secular music, the content of the lyrics must be considered. While not specifically speaking of music, Philippians 4:8 is an excellent guide as to what we should listen for in the lyrics of music, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things.” If those are the things we should be thinking about, surely also those are the things we should invite into our minds through music and lyrics. Can the lyrics in an entirely secular song be true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy? If the answer is yes, there would be absolutely nothing wrong with a Christian listening to a secular song of that nature.

At the same time, it is abundantly clear that much of secular music does not meet the standard of Philippians 4:8. Secular music often upholds immorality and violence while demeaning or belittling purity and integrity. If a song glorifies what opposes God, a Christian should not purposefully listen to it. However, there are many secular songs that have no mention of God, but still uphold godly values, such as honesty, purity, and integrity. If a love song promotes the sanctity of marriage and/or the purity of true love—but does not mention God or the Bible—such a song can still be listened to and enjoyed.

It is a fact that whatever a person allows to occupy his mind will sooner or later determine his speech and his actions. This is the premise behind Philippians 4:8 and Colossians 3:2,5: establishing wholesome thought patterns. Second Corinthians 10:5 says we should "take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ." These Scriptures give a pretty clear picture of the kind of music we should not listen to.

Obviously, the best kind of music we can listen to is that which praises and glorifies God. There are very talented Christian musicians in nearly every musical genre, ranging from classical, to rock, to rap, to reggae. There is nothing inherently wrong with any particular style of music. It is the lyrics that determine whether a song is “acceptable” for a Christian to listen to. But if a style of secular music, whether in the music itself or in the lyrics, leads you to think about or get involved in something that does not glorify God, it should be avoided.

Secular music is a very interesting topic... to me i think that as christians we have to be responsible and careful with what we put in our heads. For example one song may have something in it that does not bother you. Well when you are in a time of weakness couldn't that be the final crack? or even normal day life if you listen to a song about a certain theme won't you pycologically become used to it and in doing so your defense will be lowered. So no i don't think it i a sin or anywhere close to it bu ti think that it may lead to other sins.

Satan continues to temp, and where does he choose – the weak point, during a fast he remind Jesus that he can just turn the stones into bread. Jesus knows that that would be the shortcut and satan winning. Jesus resists and what does He do?

He speaks the Word over the situation. This is why the Word is the Living Word, for IT IS WRITTEN, satan knows this and can not stand it. The scriptures are powerful and we can speak them out.

Most secular music is written in “altered “ mind states and such states are usually induced through drugs and / or alcohol. I know, I have played in a few secular bands and worked in a few studios. So in these “altered” mind states who is controlling the source of the music, in other words what spiritual force is being tapped into? With Praise & Worship ( true Holy Spirit Worship music as there are lots of counterfeits) the source is God via the Holy Spirit. Therefore the music will re-create the spirit as music is “spiritual”

Therefore your spirit is being subjected to the spirit that influenced the composition of the music. This is why SO MANY musicians become serious drug addicts, because they are not writing the music, they are “tapping into” a source that they can only reach through drug induced states and in the process most musicians have wrecked and lost their lives. Do you think that is the fruit of God. Certainly not and we know where that comes from.

Look at the scriptures and see how many times the devil came at Jesus, not just once and when he didn’t succeed with the hunger temptation what does the devil do, tries another angle. Offers Jesus power ( which He has the greatest power) so look how the devil operates here.

Then the next thing he is trying to get Jesus to prove Himself and prove the power of God.

Jesus comes back with – “it is written”.

Look at this part v 11 , the devil leaves and the angels came.

I said that music is a subject close to me heart. This is because I am a musician, a writer, engineer and produce ( not bragging here).

There was a time in my life where music was my first love and I listen to music. I used to listen to a track 20 times/ 50 times over to really listen to the detail. I would focus on the hi-hat and then the interaction with the bass or the voice arrangement or the production or whatever it was and I would lose myself in the music.

When playing I have experienced a telepathy that happens between musicians whilst playing live, it doesn’t happen with all musicians. There is a knowing that takes place what the other musician is going to do. This form of listening and playing and foretelling was almost a trance like state. There is immense power in music and of course Lucifer was created to be music, he was a living instrument and he fell because of – pride. Gee, does that make sense.

Satan uses music and is the prince of darkness and master of deceit. All too many times Christians make light of situations and being “on guard”.

It is all way too REAL to be just coincidence. Satan is using music as a platform to seduce the world today and just too many Christians LET IT HAPPEN.

If you go to a concert, you feel that unity – all these people in the collective worshipping some pop idols ( yes worshipping). When you are exposed to that power it WILL influence your spirit and you WILL be taken with the tide.

Why do you think armies have used music for centuries ? Why do many sports teams chant or whatever you call it before a battle with their opponents. Why do glasses break ( for real) when a particular pitch is sung?

Don’t be fooled, there is a HUGE relation between music and everything around us, that is why God made the birds to sing. The Creator created music as He did all living things. Music was created for worship, Lucifer perverted it.

That is why I asked God to take it away, and He did. I haven’t bought any CDs for years. We have a really good hi-fi system in our lounge, I can not remember the last time I sat and listened to music. I didn’t lose anything I have drawn closer to Christ. I need Christ in my life and know He cares about me to the extent ever hair on my head is numbered ( wow). Therefore it is a relationship. Worshiping pop idols is a waste of life and most of them have zero interest in you except you buy their CDs.

I write and produce music and lately that s all worship and it gives me the greatest feeling of peace and awe.

I feel the same way we have to remember that music is powerful. I don't, believe, or feel that secular music is something that christian should play or listen to even christian rock, christian r&b it's almost like an oxymoron. Dark and light can't mix together. The clean and unclean shouldn't mix together also. We should want to copy or be of the world if anything they will want to copy off of us. Remember music is powerful david cast out a demon out of saul I believe just with music and no words. Music can change the atmoshpere in both good and bad ways. When people think about combining music they have to think of the basis of some of that music comes from. Especially rock n roll, and r&b and hip hop. We should want to base our group ministry/etc. off of God and be orginal not a mix of christian and the world. When people listen to that type of music I ask myself how is that bringing you closer to God or benefitting you spiritually in anyway, truth is it doesn't help it hurts. Some people just really have to let go of that music some of the problems and situations people are in, is because of the stuff that they allow into their spirit we have to be careful what we touch,see,hear,smell, and taste.

The Christian station that I listen to (the only one in town) has a tagline: the message is in the music. I work in construction and usually don't get to choose what I listen to. Here's what I've learned: the message is everwhere. The local 'rock' station plays Creed and P.O.D. I find when I listen to 'secular' music, I find my faith reaffirmed, almost constantly (I'm a musician myself, learned to play mostly secular music). What I find is that when I listen to the words, the meaning and the intent of most secular music, it's really a cry for help, a search for answers and the acknowledgement that satanic ways never end up well (insert countless examples here). I often use such music as an example of why a Christian life keeps you safe and clean. I'll bring up Rolling Stone's Sympathy for the Devil as a prime example: The only good thing coming from being satanic is death and destruction.

I know I'll get some backlash from this, but here's my comparison: Without faith, the Bible is a bunch of stories written by a bunch of dead guys. With faith, it's the most powerful collection of experiences that ever happened. Without faith, music is just music. With faith, any and all music reflects God's words and his will, either by specifically boosting it or showing us what we shouldn't do. It's all about your perspective.

It is not okay if the musicians answer questions about religion with a loud and clear "NO", and a fit of malicious giggles, as Bill Kaulitz, the frontman of the German Tokio Hotel did recently in an MTV interview.

Consider this:

The origin of rock music is often mistakenly assumed to be American. Rock music has its roots in Teutonic (ancient German) witchcraft and Satanism, in the banging of drums during orgiastic rituals full of human sacrifice in pre-Christian Europe and the pulse of terrified victims. "The average teenager consumes six hours of rock music a day" (Alan Bloom, The Closing of the American Mind, 1988).

Recently given a full front page review in the entertainment section of the New York Times and perhaps already covering a wall in your daughter's bedroom, they come under the cover of night, always sporting big hair, caps, and sunglasses to guard their unnatural eyes from the sun, and are called 'Tokio Hotel'. The hotel refers to no steady life stead, meaning they cannot linger in one place long enough because they are not powerful enough, yet, and fear the hand of God. What Tokio refers to will be discussed in a different paragraph.

They return at evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city. (Psalm 59:6)

What is important here to note is that 'Tokio Hotel' is not the band's original name. Started by a pair of twins when they were barely seven, the band's original name was Devilish. This is probably due to youthful enthusiasm and as they matured they decided to be more deceitful about their true intentions and changed it. DO NOT BE FOOLED! As children they may have been only devil-ish, now they are devils.

Disguised as an innocent 'Boy Band', and as any true Christian knows, there is no such thing as an 'innocent' Boy Band because they are part of every gay agenda (bands like The Back Street Boys and Take That! refer to homosexual activities in their group names), they influence the hormonal household of young girls and even adult women. This aberration leads to shrieking and fainting spells among the all female audience, and ultimately, demonic possession.

Like Scandinavia, Germany has a solid base of Satanic Rock music. The band the Scorpions consisted of devil worshippers who in their lyrics begged, and I quote, "DEVIL TAKE MY SOUL". Then there is the horrific group Rammstein, the blasphemous Kingdom Come, and here in the U.S., Satanic rock bands like Bon Jovi, Twisted Sister, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Marilyn Manson and so on have a strong foothold and a large fanbase. However, the power of these is nothing compared to what is coming across the ocean for our youth now.

The band's main members are identical twins, going by the suspiciously conventional names of 'Bill' (rumored to be the Anti-Christ) and 'Tom' (the hell hound, see infra), both twins have boasted their Godlessness in interviews and claim to be their own religion.

In recognition to Black Sabbath for paving the way for them by ordaining fans into the Church of Satan during concerts, Bill wears Black Sabbath t-shirts often.

What Bill and Tom's true names are is every Christian's guess, but there is no mistake that they are Nephilim, the unholy offspring of a fallen angel and a human woman. Both are very tall and have unnaturally large hands, with Bill, the more powerful, towering over everyone in the band by a difference of at least ten inches. (See Welcome to the world of Steve Quayle! for more on this, if Quayle is correct the twins may grow to a height of over nine feet!)

Barely eighteen, both twins have been covered for years in piercings (deliberately inflicted holes in various body parts) and tattoos they got by defying their elders, and have boasted getting drunk with the child welfare office, being wanted by the army, destroying private property, and taking the virginity of countless young girls, all before they graduated high school. Most sinister is that none of these girls were ever heard from again, as if the earth swallowed them up after they got too close to the hellish twins.

There are disturbing signs. The list of formerly normal men who fell to the spell of Bill is endless, we could go so far as to call him the demon gay bomb, a weapon of mass destruction that is a thousand times more powerful than abortion. He sows confusion in the loins of boys and men and makes girls and women unable to direct their affections at any other man; it is not music he sells, it is genocide in rates.

Normally reasonable men like the Guardian's Paul Lester (2007. 21.5) lose all self-respect and sense of propriety. He reports:

"Even the most ferociously heterosexual male staff up here at Guardian Unlimited Music have been found whispering, in hushed, awed tones, "Mmm, yummy, mummy" when confronted by images of Germany's handsomest export. Identical twins Bill and Tom Kaulitz are especially delicious, those cheekbones! Have those boys scrubbed and sent to our tent."

Just one more example of an innocent caught in Bill's web of sin and seduction is a German rap singer by the unlikely name of Bushido who reportedly lost his mind at the sight of the younger twin and propositioned to him for oral sex on prime-time TV. The scientific term for insanity in German is 'geistesgestort', disturbed by ghosts literally, and it is assumed that the guardian demons of the hellish twins put him in this state as punishment for his insolence. Bushido, who was feeble-minded ('schwachsinnig') to begin with, is now serving a term in an Austrian prison for sexual assault on an innocent bystander.

Fans assume that whether Bill is a homosexual or not remains open for debate, but it is more likely that like soccer player David Beckham, rock star David Bowie, and other Satanic harbingers on earth, he is a 'metro-sexual', someone who incites feelings of lust in all unsuspecting humans and uses this to control them. The only way to guard ourselves is through prayer! Do not look upon their countenance! You will be barren, like the salt plains! Remember Lot's wife! (Luke, ch. XVII, v. 32)

Both twins are vain and sport unmistakable hairstyles. Bill wears his hair long and occasionally partially bleached, in a style that is impossible for any human to maintain, even with hair styling products. Fans jokingly claim that his hair one day will devour the earth, but they have no idea how close they are to the truth.

Tom wears his hair in a style that resembles that of the barbarian Pict hordes, and there is no doubt that he intends to invade innocent souls with the same savagery. These hair styles are not just a sign of their vanity, they are functional: now that both hellspawn are reaching maturity, they need their hair and caps to cover the horns they grow on their foreheads like all Nephilim.

The older twin, Tom, born ten minutes earlier, often seems like nothing but an appendage, while nothing is further from the truth. He is the hell hound that guards the younger twin, the true Satan, the Anti-Christ. The fact that both hate chocolate, to which dogs are allergic, confirms that there is something infernally canine about them, one need only to look at their uneven and pointed teeth to confirm this. The Guardian article called them 'a puppydog Pantera', but 'puppy' is just the disguise, underneath they are ferocious beasts.

Tom has repeatedly been seen guarding Bill from entities invisible to others, most likely Angels. When feeling exposed they always keep physical contact through laying on of hands, far and beyond what is customary for siblings.

It has been suggested that they are lovers, but to brush their relationship off as mere incest would be a grave mistake. It transcends physical boundaries and has nothing as much to with lust as with mutually reinforcing the darkness in their souls and grounding themselves in the flesh on this earthly plane to fulfill their daemonic destiny. They come to pull us down into hell.

The two other members of the band are rumored to be incapable of human speech and are likely guardian ghouls (in Teutonic tradition called 'trolls'). Indeed, both of their names start with a G. Whether these two G's originally came from hell in the wake of the twins or whether they are their first victims is unclear, all that is known is that they met the twins in a bar when Bill and Tom were twelve and were recruited into their evil plot for world dominion.

In their lyrics there are frequent references to the tradition of Teutonic Witchcraft, which covered the raising of storms. The band's hits include songs like Through the Monsoon and 1000 Oceans, hinting at their ability to control the elements. The Teutons had links with the Celts and the Picts, ancient people involved in witchcraft whose characteristics both twins display. In this what Satanists call 'The Age of Aquarius' the image of water is a powerful one. In their newest album, Humanoid, they boast not being entirely human, something they have always known, something they revel in as both look increasingly reptilian.

The battle is not lost! Their first bid to conquer the world was stopped when Bill 'mysteriously' became ill before they had a chance to invade Japan. This was divine intervention, the hand of God came down to guard this vulnerable country where only 1% of the population is Christian. It is as yet unclear why, but both have strongly stressed that it is their lifelong dream to play in Tokyo, Japan. We must assume the worst: the city lends itself to Satanic ritual and human sacrifice like no other.

To this day large parts of the world remain free of their nefarious influence, but the battle is not over. My two cents on this issue: I usually avoid secular music. I was raised on it, so it's very hard for me to not want to listen to it...but here is a different view I've thought about...

Why does there have to be a genre of "christian" music? Doesn't that contradict the whole point of being a band that follows Christ? And quite honestly, the christian industry, from what I've seen..doesn't exactly make real christians look good at all.
Isn't the point of being a follower of christ to minister to those who are not christians..and seeing as how a nonchristian society reacts to christianity, it doesn't seem like we're getting the job done. People think christians are good two shoes that try and push their views on people, when really we should be living a christlike life and making it appealing for nonschristians...
What I love hearing is a nonchristian listening to a band they had no idea was christian and being like "wow, they're pretty cool. I didn't know christians could do that."

For example, U2 is a secular band and one of the most popular bands ever. they never had the label "christian" they just lived their lives following christ. Now Bono is world renown for his missions to Africa and simply living the life of a, wouldnt you know it, christian.
eventually, when asked in an interview if they were christian or not, the band answered "um....yea?" as though there was no other answer and no separation between the two genres...like it was a given.

So, my whole view on the christian genre is..I don't think it should exist...it puts a label on their music that shuts out nonchristians and pretty much chokes our entire mission as christians.

Is it wrong for a Christian to listen to secular music? I say this what you put in comes out no matter what it is. However, I am a Christian and if I am honest with myself do I ever plan to completely stop listening to secular music. No. Let's be honest. Secular music is anything that isn't worshiping Christ. Including love songs, edited songs, rap, rhythm and blues, jazz, country, a slew of different types of music and songs. So to say yes I will completely stop listening to all secular music sounds good to any devout Christian. But I am not the type of Christian to lie to myself or God. What I can say for me is that I have become more conscience of the things that I listen to especially as far as profanity, anything that encourages a lot premarital sex, or encourages smoking and drinking. However, I still listen to a very wide variety of music. I am not ashamed nor embarrassed by this. I don't think it takes away from me and my spiritual walk no more than a secular television show or reading a secular book or magazine. But this is my personal opinion based on my own journey as a Christian. It's interesting because we talk about a lot of similar topics such as this on an alternate Christian website called gracefriends.com.

I think that in society today secular music is unavoidable. The radio might be on at work or at school/college, you're friends listens to it on mp3's or phones, there's music on when you go into a shop. You can't just tell yourself you're giving it up otherwise you'd be locked in your house all the time.
I admit, there may be a large amount of songs going round with the wrong message but surely if we listen to them and note what's bad we'll realize how it's influencing others and understand why people do things...It would help us interact with those around us?
Personally I wouldn't stop listening to anything just cause it has inappropriate language or topic, i just use it to my advantage to understand why society is how it is. Also, within school/college music is a big topic that people are always talking about so knowing what music's out there always help to trigger conversations in which you can then express your opinion.
I would also like to say that many of my friends are into rock music and screamo and the other day I played them a song from a Christian band and they loved it...as Christian music is becoming more diverse more people are hearing God's word through it which I think is amazing. :)

its all a matter of what is in your heart....for me, I enjoy being able to listen to both secular and Christian, but, as said before in one of these post, its all about what the message is in the song. ALSO, its is what is in your own personal heart. I recently went on a fast from secular music to clean my mind. i noticed my heart being cluttered with things of the world, and i wanted to fill myself back up with the word of God. What better way to be able to do that when driving my car then by turning on the Christian station. but i must admit...most Christian music that is being played is starting to get boring to listen too. Not that i don’t agree with what is being sung, or the message, but the type of music. Recently there was a move in Kansas City, KS at the international house of prayer...it was there I heard for the first time "electronic Christian music" I was so excited! Why can't more Christians make upbeat tunes like this.

I also want to point out something else about listening to secular music. It plays a huge role in being able to witness to others. Because music is such a huge influence in everyone’s lives, being able to witness to a non Christian and listening to secular music is actually a advantage! That is how i met most of my friends, and was able to witness to them!

So...the main thing to remember in all this...what’s in your heart!

If it is wrong to listen to secular music then all the people who attend the symphony are in big trouble. Most classical music was not written for church use, and thus is secular.
Modern composers like John Williams and David Arkenstone write beautiful secualr music that carry no message whatsoever because they are intrumentals. With out the lyrics to guide thought patterns the music is just that - music. But the NO SECULAR MUSIC crowd would not want any of it listened to because it is not "chruch based".

Personally, I would take many good instrumental secular pieces over the shallow Christian stuff that is on the padio these days.

My view is to avoid secular music that sends a bad message. The term "You are what you eat" comes into play here. You're only as good as what you associate yourself with. I myself listen to music that sends a particularly bad message before football games claiming they were "pump ups" until I descovered when Skillet released Monster that it could include the same influence into my excitement. Music has degenerated so much since lyrics were created but only through language. When you look back at even old country and blues songs there were still messages that were unchristian being sent through them. Although I agree that most secular music is nowhere near the correct message we should send through speakers I do believe that not all groups that way are immorale. Some songs by a heavy metal group I listened to in my rebelious stages have very Christian influences and backgrounds but then the very next track has about six F-bombs in them. I just choose to hit the skip button and listen to the songs that have the messages I believe should be sent.

In conclusion, I truely believe nothing is wrong with secular music but I do have a problem with messages that are sent through both songs and videos. So my opinion is simply to think about what you're listening to first. Is the message one you want to live by? Or does it just sound cool?

I don't see anything wrong with listening to secular music. I'm a devoted Christian, too. However, one thing I have to realise day by day is really what the effect of music has in my life.

I've ever felt lonely at times and when I listen to sad songs, I feel even more lonely! Same when I listen to a lot of hard rock songs. Somehow it makes me being a harder person, more angry, etc.

I think we all have to agree that there is no song that is not written without the feeling of the composer at the time of writing. We never know what their feeling was. I could be full of joy, happiness but also could be full of hate, rebel, grudge, etc.

A religious song on the other hand, I believe, was always written WITHOUT any hate whatsoever. How can you praise God and at the same time hate him? How can you write a song that motivates people but at the same time teaching them to hate their neighbours? Out of thousands of religious song I hear every day, there hasn't been any that teaches me to hate God nor my neighbour.

Listen to secular music is not about wrong or right.. go ahead if you want to.. but the question : "is it useful enough for you?" ..
i'm a musician, sometimes i listen to secular music, search for a good arrangement to learn. :)
1 Corinthians 10:23 says "All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not"

I don't think it's wrong as long as it's just for entertainment. But some types of music become a lifestyle for people and go against what I believe God wants of us. One thing that bothers me though is how so many christians think it's wrong to listen to secular music but have no problem watching secular movies and TV. My friend's mom won't let her listen to secular music (like mainstream stuff, not any crazy satanic stuff or anything), but she lets her watch just about anything she wants on TV. If anything, I think visual entertainment has the potential to be more corruptive and damaging than music. But that's just my opinion.
