Is it worth to talk to God even though I'm not sure he exists?

I'm agnostic but tend to lean towards atheism more as opposed to religion.
More than anything I want God to be there.
I don't want to live my whole life worried about what happens after I die.
I'm scared of the thought of passing away.
I talk to God.
I ask him to lead me towards him.
Nothing ever happens.
I don't get any reassuring feelings.

More than anything I want God to be there.

Do you?

By that question I refer you to the first sentence in your post ... if you truly wanted God to exist then you would be an agnostic leaning towards theism rather than atheism. But that said, the rest of your post does indicate a leaning towards theism rather than atheism. You know what your heart is though... :)

I talk to God.

That's a good start. When you think about it, as the Bible says, anyone who wants to come to Him must believe that God exists and that He rewards those who sincerely seek Him (Hebrews 11:6).

However, God will not necessarily answer your prayers or work in the same way as He does in Christians' lives because you are still 'in-sin' and are currently not a child of God.

But if you earnestly seek Him, then through circumstances God will enable you to come to knowledge of the truth about Him. Don't expect some flashing sign pointing you in the right direction or a personal revelation of sorts in a dream or even hear the voice of God ... the truth is that it is faith that pleases God and it is faith that justifies. When you let go of your scepticism and your fears that hold you back ... watch God catch you.

I ask him to lead me towards him.
Nothing ever happens.
I don't get any reassuring feelings.

Like I said above, don't expect any grand response ... I didn't get such a thing and neither did the large majority of Christians. In fact, it was through manipulation of circumstances that the great evangelist Billy Graham was able to hear the Gospel message and commit His life to God. From what I have heard (heresy so don't take it as truth on my word), Graham attended a revival meeting but there was no place to sit. Just when he was about to leave, a Christian gave up his seat and over the next few nights, he became a Christian and in subsequent months, he became one of the most successful and genuine Christian evangelists.

Maybe for you, you may have a slight feeling to go to church for once, or maybe this forum is a starting place where you can release the fears and questions that you have about faith and see what some Christians have to say to help you.

Ultimately, I guess what I'm saying is not to ignore the fact that God often works in subtle ways and through circumstance - not usually through grand revelation or flashes in the sky. God may touch you through your feelings (depending on who you are ... God touches some through emotions more than others - I, for example, don't feel God that much) or convictions ... or thoughts about attending church or reading the Bible may pop into your head or whatever. I'm just saying not to dismiss them as those could be the answers that you are waiting for.

If it helps you, just go out to a distant and natural location (for me it is the beach late at night time or the local mountain) and be by yourself for a while with God. Just look at the panorama around you and try to see God's glory and majesty through the simple things that He has created. You will need to change your mind view (i.e. become more open) and unharden your heart (against God) though.

I hope it works out for you though. Also, you may want to try talking to your parents about it. Ask them about their personal faith and how they deal with stepping out in faith when you don't have all the answers...

Something has happened every time you have talked to Him! He always answers your prayers, although maybe not in the exact way that you expect...have faith and keep praying and His answer will gradually reveal its self. It might be so sudden and in your everyday life that you don't notice it at first but it will happen...just a matter of time!

EDIT: And what DefintelyMaybe said! He beat me too it since I had to go away for a bit :p

Its not an accident that you have come into this website. The Bible is the most true book in the world. I'm a christian spiritually first and intellectually one second. Below are facts about the Bible in a nutshell. Its the only book period that has hundreds of detailed prophesies in it that have come true - and more will be fulfilled. It could only be written by God - no other book remotely compares.

Biblical Evidence – This is a very small amount of information
out of large amounts of information out there.

Internal Evidences-Prophesies that are confirmed with Bible;

mentioning only a few – but there are hundreds.

Life of Christ
The Tribe of Judah, Gen. 49:10, Luke 3:23-28
(Genesis was written 4004 BC to 1689 BC)
(Luke’s time period is 60-70 AD)

Royal Line of David, Jer 23:5, Matt 1:1
(Jeremiah 760 to 698 BC)/(Matthew 60-70 AD)

Born of a Virgin, Isaiah 7:14/Matt 1:18-23
(Isaiah 760 to 698 BC)/(60-70 AD)

Rise of Empires
In the book of Daniel, Chapter 2 – four kingdoms are described in the interpretation
of the dream of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon: Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greek – Daniel 8:21, 10:20/ and a fourth great kingdom to follow which was part iron and clay – which is the
Roman Empire – during this empire, Christ came and the church was established – Daniel 2:44.

Historical Accuracy

The Bible is loaded with historical statements concerning events of hundreds of years ago, yet
none of them has been proven to be incorrect.
(Bible compared to other ancient documents)
New Testament – starts at 25 years – between the original and surviving copies
Homer- starts at 500 years/Demosthenes – at 1400 years/Plato – at 1200 years/
Caesar – at 1000 years

Number of Manuscript Copies

New Testament – 5,686/Homer – 643/Demosthenes – 200/Plato – 7/Caesar – 10

Consistency – Written by 40 men over a period of time exceeding 1400 years, and has no
Internal inconsistencies.

Claim of Inspiration- It claims to be spoken by God, 2 Tim 3:16-17). No other religious book makes such claims.

External Evidences

(Prophesies Outside the Bible)
These cities were prophesied to be destroyed and never to be built again- and they haven’t.
Niveveh – Nahum 1:10, 3:7, 15, Zephaniah 2:13-14
Babylon – Isaiah 13:1-22
Tyre -Ezekiel 26:1-28

Bible before Science

He hangs the earth on nothing – Job 26:7
(Job was written at least 1000 years ago – some scholars think it could have been even 3000
years ago)
Note: Man only knew the above for 350 years.
Earth is a sphere – Isaiah 40:22/Air has weight – Job 28:25/
Gravity – Job 26:7, Job 38: 31-33/Winds blow in cyclones, Eccl 1:6

Documents that Prove Bible is True

Gilgamesh Epic, The Sumerian King List, Mari Tablets, Babylonian Chronicles

Archealogical Evidence (Still adding to this list today- it hasn’t stopped)
Excavations of Ur, Location of Zoar, Ziggurats and the foundation of Tower of Babel

Also, I would consider reading Evidence That Demands A Verdict by Josh McDowell/Examining the Evidence by Muncaster(a former athiest) and The Real Jesus by Lee Strobel(also a former athiest) and I Don't Have Enough Faith to Be an Athiest by Norman L. Geisler and Frank Turek

www.reasons.org - A great website of science and belief. No, they don't contradict - I'm a scientist.

Every unbeliever has good reason to be scared of passing away! Keep praying to God and study His Word for it is thru the Scriptures that God speaks to us and makes Himself known. But don't rely on your feelings; they are not at all reliable. Let the Bible be the final court of appeal regardless of what others say.

Hi, Before we come to Christ, we are separated from God, due to the rebellion or fall (sin) of satan and (sin) man and our own sin.

All wrongdoing is sin.

We have before coming to Christ what one may call a fatal disease, sin.. Fatal because if we die in our sin we will go to hell, and always be separated from God, never reconciled.

and as well before Christ we are in bondage to satan, though unawares of course.

With the fall man (adam and eve) believed the lies of satan and man does to this day. satan would keep any from coming to Christ, and achieves this by lies and deception about God, about our condition, keeping people in the dark about God (many do not think of God at all), and there is much done by satan to keep men from God. satan is a liar, deciever and murderer.

You said you talk to God and nothing ever happens.

Do you have faith/trust that Jesus died for your sin and to free us from bondage to satan and that by trusting or having faith in God will reconcile you to God?

That is how one is born again. One way.

There is no reassuring feelings one gets, but we do know when we've come to Christ for the most part.

One at your age or my age would know when we come to Christ, and it's not because of a feeling we get. It's that our lives are changed when we commit our lives to Christ/trust in Christ, have faith in Christ.

To come to Christ, you may need more information, or you may not. But as I highlighted in blue above do you believe that?

You may have stumbling blocks that keep you from God. Nothing can keep God from giving you the free gift of salvation which only comes faith/trust in Jesus as I wrote above.

Jesus is right there waiting for you to have faith and trust in Him. God is not far away.

You do not have to change to come to Christ, you come as you are. God changes us and works in us once we are in Christ and does so until we are with Him in heaven and even there, we will be forever learning of and about God.

If you can think of the things that are keeping you from God, you can post them here and we can help go through them.

Once we are in Christ, we are forgiven our sin past present and future and the healing begins. We still sin, though we seek not to. Every person's walk with God is different and we are all in different places, so one may be walking closely with God and another not, and is okay, as is where they are, and God knows their hearts.

When we come to Christ, we are alive for the first time ever in our lives, and we are free, we are no longer in bondage to the world.

Jesus freed us from the slavery to satan (like I said, unawares people are in slavery to satan) and makes us free in Christ. As we grow in Christ, our minds are renewed or changed as we read the bible and learn truths. Our old way of thinking changes, many no longer desire to do what they did in the past, tho again each person is different and their growth different.

There is nothing any one could offer me that would make me not trust Christ for my life. Nothing..

There is nothing compares to life in Christ.

We will struggle, we will suffer just as non christians do, and in some instances depending on many things, more than non Christians do, but not always, but God says we will suffer and struggle.

Men will hate us because of Jesus. Some of our families consider us nobodies, fools, etc, because we have faith in Jesus.

Some friends will or may no longer desire to be our friends, and we may desire to no longer be friends with those we used to do wrong with.

Though sometimes it works out well, as can remain friends, which is good as then our lives in Christ is revealed thru who we are, not so much by what we say, but by our actions, the change they see in us.

We know in Christ that God works all things to the good for those who believe in Him. So we know that no matter what happens, God will work it to our good. We may not see it that day, it may be years in retrospect or perhaps not seen in this life, but we know that is truth.

We know once in Christ, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. So when we hear condemnation we know it is not from God.

We know God will never leave us or forsake us, never.. He never let's one of His go. No one can snatch us from the fathers hand.

We know though this world is very difficult that it is a short time here as compares to eternity with God.

We have many things and promises in the bible which help us through every day, every moment, all our lives.

God bless,
tapero

How much evidence is needed before a person is convinced there is a God? Look at some of the characters in the Bible who thought they were so high and mighty until the day God brought them low. Some lived to tell the tale, others didn't.

However, the Jews were convinced and saw evident demonstration of God's existence, yet they went against him time and again. So much so they lost their homeland twice as a direct consequence of their actions. That is perhaps why a mosque sits on the temple foundations in Jerusalem and not the temple itself.
It takes faith to believe in God. Not just any faith, but one that answers your questions, gives you hope that when or if you die you are not frightened in any way. Many who have been in a similar situation to yours pray.
You may get an answer yet in a way you don't expect. So keep on praying.

And the fact that you don't 'feel' anything doesn't mean that He is not working.
You asked Him to lead you towards Him.. and here you are in a place where you can find out more about Him!
Talking to Him is never a waste of time.
I don't know whether you ever read the Bible... but if you read the psalms you will find that a great many of them ask where God is, and why He isn't listening... and yet, they inevitably turn to praise as He reveals His plan.
God wants to be in a relationship with you... that is the important thing.
Faith is not something you can do yourself, it is a gift... and it is one that God promises to give us if we ask.
Keep seeking, and you *will* find the answer... that is a promise directly from God:

Jeremiah 29:13
You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

Matthew 7:7-8
7"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

God bless you, I am praying that you will find what you are seeking .

thanks.
I feel more convinced that god isn't real after coming to this site though.
There are so many questions unanswered.
I was actually reading through the book of Matthew last night to see what I could make of it.
and there are people who spend their entire lives looking after never find what they are seeking.
That's not to say I'm going to give up. I'm just going to dig deeper for the truth.

Asking Christians if it's worth it to pray to God? We'll give you the obvious answer, which is a resounding YES!

Here are Orthodox evening prayers that you might try:

The Trisagion Prayers

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

O heavenly King, O Comforter, the Spirit of truth, who art in all places and fillest all things; Treasury of good things and Giver of life: Come and dwell in us and cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls, O gracious Lord.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal: have mercy on us. (Thrice)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
All-holy Trinity, have mercy on us. Lord, cleanse us from our sins. Master, pardon our iniquities. Holy God, visit and heal our infirmities for thy Name's sake.
Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Through the prayers of our holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us and save us. Amen.

Troparia of Thanksgiving

Now that the day has come to a close, I thank thee, O Lord, and I ask that the evening with the night may be sinless; grant this to me, O Saviour, and save me.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Now that the day hath passed, I glorify thee, O Master, and I ask that the evening, with the night may be without offence; grant this to me, O Saviour, and save me.

Both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Now that the day hath run its course, I praise thee, O Holy One, and I ask that the evening with the night may be undisturbed; grant this to me, O Saviour, and save me.

Lord, have mercy. (12 times)

A Prayer for Forgiveness

O Lord our God, if during this day I have sinned, whether in word or deed or thought, forgive me all, for thou art good and lovest mankind. Grant me peaceful and undisturbed sleep, and deliver me from all influence and temptation of the evil one. Raise me up again in proper time that I may glorify thee; for thou art blessed: with thine Only-begotten Son and thine All-holy Spirit: now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

The Creed

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible;

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only-begotten, Begotten of the Father before all worlds, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, Begotten, not made; of one essence with the Father, by whom all things were made:

Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man;

And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried;

And the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures;

And ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of the Father;

And He shall come again with glory to judge the quick and the dead, Whose kingdom shall have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, and Giver of Life, Who proceedeth from the Father, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, Who spake by the Prophets;

And I believe in One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.

I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins.

I look for the Resurrection of the dead.

And the Life of the world to come. Amen.

O Christ our God, who at all times and in every hour, in heaven and on earth, art worshipped and glorified; who art long-suffering, merciful and compassionate; who lovest the just and showest mercy upon the sinner; who callest all to salvation through the promise of blessings to come; O Lord, in this hour receive our supplications, and direct our lives according to thy commandments. Sanctify our souls, hallow our bodies, correct our thoughts, cleanse our minds; deliver us from all tribulation, evil and distress. Encompass us with thy holy Angels, that guided and guarded by them, we may attain to the unity of the faith and to the knowledge of thine unapproachable glory, for thou art blessed unto ages of ages. Amen.

Here may be added your own private devotions and intercessions, using your own words or the "Occasional Prayers". When you have finished, conclude with this prayer:

Through the prayers of our holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy upon us and save us. Amen.

As you lie down to sleep, say:

Into thy hands, O Lord, I commend my soul and my body. Do thou thyself bless me, have mercy upon me, and grant me life eternal. Amen.

I think if people start doing in their lives like there is God, they will just come into being one of His children.
This post has incredible truth to length ratio. :p

I think I would be hard pressed to, at the very moment I am needing something or seeking something, point out exactly when God helped me find it, or when I suddenly felt differently. It is true some people have experiences like that, but I don't seem too. I can however look back and identify now, what I was blind to then, and say with certainty that I feel God was directly responsible for that event, that convinction, that 'thing' that happened, as I cannot explain it any other way. For some reason, as people we often find it harder to identify these moments, as we are living them when they are sometimes such subtle things.

Cheers,

I'm at a point where almost none of this makes sense to me.
There are too many things in the way of me believing in an all powerful being.
Science, logic, truths about the world that don't match up with the bible's account at all.
As time advances I feel like the things in that book become more primitive.
It's clear to me that organized religion is on a decline in popularity, and it's because things just don't make sense and things don't match up.
I love life, I love my family, and my friends.
It used to seem to me that everything in this world is just to complex to be put together by non living cells and such.
Even the idea that this life came from a bunch of non living cells doesn't seem very far fetched to me anymore.
I just keep this little bit of hope inside me alive.
I'm not sure how much longer it'll be there tho.

Big bang theory has been going strong since the 20's with strong evidence supporting it.
Even older than that is another one of the most popular scientific
theories, called Evolution.

I don't have a problem with the Big Bang theory, I have issues with people not thinking it through. The Big Bang theory is basically saying that our physical universe, time and matter all came from 'something' and prior to this thing, none of it existed, yet in the face of that people still find the idea that the spiritual does not exist.

Also I think you would do well to look into the original theory of evolution put forward by Darwin, as it's a far cry from what is taught today, just as the initial theory of our universe is very different from that of the period it was coined in.

I think your problem at the moment appears to be that I, or any Christian can say, "God loves you, He is merciful and He wants you to acknowledge Him." and it would mean as much as me saying, "The Ur-Quan masters are out there, they really hate you and want you to bow before their unmerciful rule.". That's totally fine, as really you need to go back many steps to what is the most basic, lowest and simplest thing that makes you not believe in God. That's where you should start, and build up from there.

Cheers,

I think your problem at the moment appears to be that I, or any Christian can say, "God loves you, He is merciful and He wants you to acknowledge Him." and it would mean as much as me saying, "The Ur-Quan masters are out there, they really hate you and want you to bow before their unmerciful rule.". That's totally fine, as really you need to go back many steps to what is the most basic, lowest and simplest thing that makes you not believe in God. That's where you should start, and build up from there.

I think the most basic thing that makes me not believe in god is that he's never shown me that he's there.
My life has been just about a complete wreck so far.
I've been in in DHS shelters, foster homes, my mom abandoned me for drugs a lot when I was younger when my dad was in the hospital for breaking his back. I'd go periods of a week or more eating nothing but a couple of bananas.
The only things this life has given me is my dad.
I want nothing more but for there to be a god so I never lose the one person that's always been here for me.

Hi Imscared34,

Ok, so in your mind the fact that bad or negative things occur, means that God is either not present, or not as the Christians see Him to be?

Am I correct in this, or have I misunderstood? :)

I just don't see why under any circumstances a loving god would let his creations go through some of the things people do.
In my mind no one should have to go through hell on earth or the hell god created.
