I've heard from some people that planting marigolds around your garden will prevent some of the bugs from eating your plants? Is this true? If not, then what should I do to keep bugs out? I'm a little worried about spraying my vegetable with anything, 'cause I have a cat who likes to play around in my garden, and I don't want him to end up being poisoned.

Mix up garlic and red cayanne pepper in water. Spray this on your plants. It will not hurt your pets but they will not mess with your plants.
It will also keep pests off. I have tried the marigold thing. I did not have much sucsess there.

I tried the marigolds last year, but they got covered up so quickly with fast-growing vegetables. Honestly, I couldn't tell, but didn't have bug problems so mbe it worked.

Salt around the perimeters helps with slugs... epsom salts gives tomatoes more magnesium... that shouldn't bother your cat.

Garlic around my roses seemed to help a little bit. I use the systemic type on those. Spraying leaves with soapy water helps too. Especially with aphids. Just a teaspoon in a pint of water does help. Put that solution in a sprayer bottle, and it gets rid of aphids quickly.

marigolds do help with some pests though apparently not slugs. various onions help with aphids and other pests.
I use chives around my roses to reduce the aphids. It's not as effective as the systemic fertilizer stuff but then I don't worry about using my rosehips for tea.

Alright listen up guys marigolds keep nematods away from there roots. Some people think that planting marigolds in the bed with their veggies will keep the nematods away from the vegetables as well.

What are nematods I hear you ask. They are not bugs (at least not in the biological sense). They are a type of unsegmentsed (ie not earthworms) parasitic worm that lives in the soil. Here is a picture:

Marigolds certainly don't keep away snails, they love to eat them! lol

You might find this site interesting for information about companion planting:
http://www.ommas-aarden.net/comp_plant.htm

As I understand it, French Mariogolds are the ones to plant with tomatoes. I plant basil as it keeps whitefly away from tomatoes, particularly in the greenhouse.

I also don't plant in big groups as to interplant helps to confuse the little creatures who want to feast on my efforts.

I hear the snails like beer, so you put some beer out for them and they drink the beer and drown... I have never tried it, so I don't know if it works...
I remember my mum planting Marigold one year....when I was little I had fun helping her plant them...

Interesting you mentioned this. I heard this week on the radio that Idaho farmers were haveing trouble selling their crop due to nematoids. If I hadent read this I would have had no idea what they were talking about.

Putting out a bowl of beer helps with slugs. If you have a big garden, put out several, in different places.

Yes, garlic between rose bushes helps, and so do onions. You can buy garlic at the grocery store and plant it, and same with the white bulbs from green onions.

Marigolds deter some animals and bugs, and I've heard the soapy water cure from lots of garden professionals.
