Getting into my late 30's, I often begin to wonder if its too late to do things. There have been things that I have always wanted to do as a passion, but seems like that most everyone else is already doing what I wanted to do, and I ask myself, what's the point? Is it too late for me?

For instance, i've always wanted to learn to play keyboard, learn to compose my own music (only for hobby). Being a video editor-working with audio has always been my dream to do as a career, as that's what I felt God has put in me in the past to do. Though I currently work as a commercial driver as my night job, its not my career path and often just find it boring to even bother going to work each evening. I only go because I have to in order to keep my monthly bills at bay, which isn't much.

I'll be turning 37 later this month and I am starting to wonder and feel if its really too late for me. Most people have done countless things during their teens and 20's and by this time are quite proficient at it. I'm not sure where I went wrong. I see so many Youtube video of others making good videos yet, it makes me ask what's the point of making a video when everyone else has already done it? In other words, what could I do any different that someone else has already done.

I'm sure that God has a purpose for me somewhere, somehow but even then I begin to wonder, why has God put me here in the first place. If I have no purpose then there's no need for me to even be here.

I live alone and I haven't had any church home in over 5 years. While I'm not depressed or anything I just often feel that there's just nothing left out there for me to do other than to work and come home every night.

Has anyone ever felt like this? Or am I the only one?

It is never too late until you are dead.

I am about to BEGIN my career as a nurse and I am 48.

I personally think that it is in your forties that you really start to become free to become whom they really are. Our kids are growing up and moving out. Our parents are no longer living their dreams for us through our lives.

What exactly do you think you are too old for? and why couldn't you do it now or some time in the future?

nope not too old. Haven't you heard? Old is the new young LOL.

Seriously though you are never too old. For me, I know I am too old to do certain things. Not because I am too old, but because I think I am too old. I don't have the drive and passion to go back to school and I feel like even if I did, it would not benefit me career wise so I won't be doing that.

But unless YOU feel you are too old, you are not.

lets see say it takes 3 yrs of studying and learning to get to know what you want to know so you have have fun with it. So that makes you 40. We all know no one lives past 40, heck I didn't try to have more than 2 GFs will I was 60 ... so it couldn't have happened. Since I died 20 yrs ago.

OK so I'm having fun with your post .. you haven't even lived half your life yet, so you can learn and do more in the next half that you did in the 1st half!

I suspect that it is God that is calling you to try these new things. Often we don't know where God wants us to end up when we start following the dreams he places in our hearts.

And trust me, what you are feeling is very normal (it is actually a healthy stage in our psychological development)...but what you do with it, is up to you...

Well, I have wanted to learn to play the keyboard for starters. I am musically inclined, but it takes alot of time and practice to really be proficient at it. It seems that as we get up in age, its more of a challenge to concentrate on one thing at a time, while younger people have an easier time.

I guess its all in the frame of mind. I know the enemy has a time trying to convince people that they have nothing to offer, and sometimes I do struggle with that. What I probably should try to work on is to make myself do the things I would like to do/accomplish. But then again its tough to getting a start somehow.

It's not too late to change directions. I have had three main types of work so far. I wouldn't worry too much if other people are doing what you want to do. Just see what you are interested in and look for opportunities. I had to change jobs, move, take a few risks. I did odd things like leave a job in my old field to take a temp, lower paying job in the field I wanted to work in - in a couple of years it paid off well. I had some years where I felt stuck and not much went right. Not everything came easily to me and I have been knocked down a few times. I just kept plugging away even when I was tired and discouraged. Just find something you are passionate about and have a knack for.

I know that when I started back to school, I was told the following story about another woman. She was a nurse. Then she hurt her back in her mid-thirties and was very limited to what she could do in that field. She confided to her mom that she wanted to be a lawyer, but she would be 40 before she would complete the training. Her mother looked at her and said "You will become 40 anyway. So decided, do you want to be 40 with or without your law degree?"

So it takes time to learn...what else do you have at this time? Use that time wisely. This sounds like the parable of the talents...

Hi there and welcome to the forum:wave:

I've gone through a similar kind of thinking as you and I"m 41 feeling as if life passed me by and now so many young people do things I can't do. Stuff I should know by now I don't that many people just know and do. I'm still trying to get a career started and it hasn't happened. I just worked as a tech as opposed to a full biologist as I started the schooling late for that even. But to get anywhere with steady work you need at least a master's and i can't afford to go into so much debt at my age. I've done a lot of housekeeping type work to get by.

But it's definitely NOT too late to try new things! I am here to tell you I hope you pursue that music calling! I've played music most of my life and i know of people just beginning to play an instrument well past your age! I see a lot of adults just learning to play violin and taking private lessons along with the kids. Heck! I go to taekwondo classes with 5 year olds who are more advanced than me! Grandma Moses, the American artist, didn't even know she could paint until she was like 60!

Question:How do you get to Carnigie Hall?

Answer: You practice, practice , and practice.
