  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This poll needed to have "Huh?" as a choice. To me the question seems like a semantic game - near to asking if it's reasonable to be reasonable. So, you would have to pose a situation where you think it's reasonable to believe something false so I can start to comprehend what you're even thinking about.

Let's say it's true that the Firschizleschmocks exists. Merely because it is true that the Firschizleschmocks exists, is that enough to make it reasonable to believe that the Firschizleschmocks exists?

It begs the question of how (or whether) you know that something is true. But yes, it's reasonable to believe things that are true.

Not sure if I understand the question
Therefore I voted no.:p

If something is true, then it is and I am not required to believe it.

Yes, but do we know that Firschizleschmocks exist?

I mean, it may be true that the 123847192837412745871293871923874912847591287391827349817245987129354871293487129837591283759128375th digit of pi is '7', but unless we know that it is, there is no reason to believe that it is.

It is true that the first digit of pi is 3. And we all, I hope, know this, and therefore it is reasonable to believe it.

What we know to be true is irrelevant. When asking if it's reasonable to believe that which is true, what's relevant is what really is true and what we believe.

For example, let's say it were true that I am actually a 17 headed invisible fire breathing monster named Dexter. It would not be reasonable to believe that's the truth - even though it would be in that case.

How about the case where all the data we have points towards a false conclusion and none (at least none that we've found so far) points to the true one? In that case, it would be reasonable to believe in something false. Of course, we wouldn't know it was false at the time so like you say, it is kinda playing word games with the definition of true and false.

Seems to be an ontology vs. epistemology question at best. It is reasonable to believe stuff we have good reason to believe in, but we don't always have reason to believe in things which are true. It is true that there are either an even or odd number of atoms in the sun, yet we really have no reason to believe in either case as being true simply due to a lack of information.

Is it reasonable to believe that which is true?

This will depend on the epistemological praxis to which any particular person subscribes; it will also depend on her current mental state.
