Is is possible to be neither Arminian or Calvinist?
Be aware that what you may not be fully understanding Arminianism and Calvinism, so you may be thinking of two points on the spectrum different from true Arminianism and Calvinism.
Yes it is.
But it's not possible to be neither a synergist or monergist (which is really the core and foundation of the debate between Arminianism and Calvinism)
Everyone is one or the other.
A monergist is one who believes God creates man already evil and then randomly chooses to give eternal life to a few but leaves most of them to suffer forever, BECAUSE GOD LOVES HIMSELF, right? But in any event man has nothing to do with anything that happens--correct?

Well i meant like why does there have to be this Arminian or Calvinist lable over everything, why can't people just be Christians.
If that is what a monergist is i am definitely not a monergist.

As a Lutheran I'm a monergist, however also as a Lutheran I believe that God loves everyone, desires everyone to be saved, and that Christ died for everyone. No exceptions.

If you say so
Part of being a follower of Christ is giving him the credit He deserves for saving us
I agree. What I disagree with is the idea of the elect.
There is nothing a person can do to receive salvation except for receiving the gift He freely gave, and part of receiving that gift is knowing that without His sacrifice, we would not be able to be saved at all
So you deny that the Bible speaks of group of people called "the elect"? The "idea of the elect" as you called it is not our idea, but the Bible's idea.
If you deny it, doesn't that mean your problem is with the Bible and not a particular soteriology? Seriously, bust out your electronic Bible software and do a search for "elect", "the elect", "God's elect" and take a gander for yourself how many times it appears in the NT and who it is referring to. It's referring to you, MP.
Surely you know that after all this time, this is not the issue or controversy that we are discussing. Nobody would disagree with your above statement.
In fact, some people would say that the reason they are saved is precisely because of what Christ did for us. When he died for me, he was securing everything I needed to be saved and reconciled to God, including the very willingness to turn to him and the very faith needed to obey the gospel.
Some people refuse to give him that much credit though
Only some credit...only some.
