I have looked through the threads on this website and discovered another user just like me who wants to see if it possible to go old school in 2022. I have made a decision to entertain myself by old school forms of entertainment such as DVD and CD. If anyone's interested maybe you can join this journey with me! I'm also considering going without Wi-Fi as well.

I still have a small CD collection. And I still collect hard copy movies whenever possible. Though I look for blurays instead of dvds. The picture quality is just so good. I have a few VHS tape movies still, and a VCR to play em.

The best thing about DVD's and CD's is that I actually OWN the content rather than paying for extended rents. I've bought digital content only for my ownership of them revoked for some reason. There's also accounts getting shut down and forever losing all that content. No internet required either.

Yes. I regularly check out DVDs from the library. Streaming platforms are good, but they are very 'exclusive.' Disney = only Disney stuff, Paramount = only Paramount stuff. Etc. If you like a variety of things like I do, you can be limited. So I like DVDs still. I can check out a silly Disney cartoon, a scary horror movie, a sappy romance, & an anime. You'd have to be part of 4 streaming services to watch that variety.
My best friend has a giant DVD collection. He likes physically owning them & being able to show off.
It's technically not DVD, but a lot of people watch Blu Ray. I'll be getting a Blu Ray player soon.

It depends how much you like the streaming only shows. If you really wanted you could do streaming services one month a year, like get Disney Plus and watch things such as The Mandolorian and Loki. Again, just depends what you are into, there are tons of classic shows with a lot of episodes. During holidays you can get some pretty good deals on box sets and some places sell them used.

DVD's yes - my downtime is so limited anyway that I can't justify a NetFlix subscription. That, plus, I am simply NOT a homebody.

CD's - no, Spotify is king. Even though I DO own a few Beatles records, they're purely for archival reasons. The 1968 release of the White Album came with all of the posters and lyric sheets, and I've managed to keep them all in near-perfect condition. Obviously, I found them in perfect condition because I wasn't buying records 53 years ago.

Cassettes? They really were a step backwards weren't they? They were better than records how?

I'm a nice balance between nostalgic and 'with it' I think.

I find that Spotify is too expensive over time. I just can't justify $120 dollars a year for renting music which is not a physical object in your hands.
I am going to start borrowing CD's for free at my local Library.

I don't watch cable TV because I find that there's nothing on worth watching ( there is too many ads breaks for a half a hour show). I don't listen to radio cuz there's so much talking even on music stations. These are the main reasons I made this choice.

I hear ya there. I used to spend $150/month on cable until I realized I only watched it during football season. Now that the season is coming to a close...there's really nothing else on.

It is possible to be a physical media collector these days but getting harder and more expensive in some ways if you want to buy second hand media which is what I do about 99% of the time and I typically pay a fraction of the cost of new media for movies and music but it does take a lot of looking around keeping track of what you want and have and for rarer titles that are not common to local stores you often have to go online to procure some titles.
As I finally the last year or so I got a smart tv and faster internet for the same price of slow internet I've gotten into streaming free media via apps and I'm slowly eating up most of the titles that interest me just like what happened when I had cable tv.

The advantage of physical media sold is twofold in that movies often include digital copies when bought in DVD/Blu-Ray/4K type formats, the Digital only copies sold online are often the SAME price as a Blu-Ray so when you buy physical media for the digital copy you get the physical media for free.

There are a lot of advantages in physical media one of which is you can transfer ownership of it and will it to others upon your death while digital media is not transferrable.... period so that huge collection of media you have in your collection goes poof when they find out you are no longer living that you often pay as much or almost as much as physical media.

Another advantage is you can play CDs and DVDs any time you want to, you can take them to a friends house and play them, you can load them to people, trade and sell movies you no longer want to watch too. As I have my music ripped from CDs to my phone I can stream them via bluetooth in my vehicle and at times I have been out of range of cell service such that only radio and songs copied to my phone were available.

I recommend people who want to start their own physical media collection go to flea markets and second hand stores even thrift stores and start their collection that way as there is a learning curve buying used media as you need to inspect the discs for playability as there is a level of scratch/damage that discs can handle and still play properly but some scratches and extensive scratching on some media will cause media to not play properly. I've gotten to be almost an expert on inspecting media but the savings can be hugs as I've gotten sealed Blu-rays that cost $20 in stores for about $3 many many times and DVD movies for 50 cents that look to have only been played once as the case was not sealed but not even a scuff anywhere to be found.

I probably have several hundred movies that I've not seen on any free streaming service in my collection and a lot of older disney movies that I would have to pay to watch and hop through a bunch of other movies to stream them at possibly less quality than a blu-ray has.

Not just possible, but this is a good time to do it. Used CDs and DVDs are cheap. They were expensive when they were state of the art, and they'll probably go up in value as they become collector's items.

It all greatly depends on the title and how saturated the market was by studios as popular movies have DVDs, the Blu-Rays, then even 4K discs and at times are also included in box sets too and movies that are primarily thrillers with not outstanding action and/or dialogue in them end up abandoned by people that have seen them too many times and remember the movie such that the mystery/surprise that was the main contributor to it being thrilling...... is gone. I've been to stores that sell used media and seen the same titles in the stores from plainly mediocre overrated movies with popular actors to a lot of thrillers good for a 1-3 times view then boring thereafter. Some movies are rare to find period as they simply did not produce enough copies to supply the public and went out of print early. At one time there were movies that they produced DVDs in the early to mid 90s and didn't ever reprint them till late 2000s such that trying to find the movie to buy was almost impossible and movies that came out early often didn't properly support widescreen tvs or simply were fullscreen format and there was never an up to date version produced. We have a lot of movies that were older classics in less popular genres that a limited audience likes and there are special limited editions of movies that are plainly expensive to get like Criterion and Olive and some Shout Factory and other limited versions that often are also remasters. Disney has limited edition movies that are only available on their movie club and unless you want to join and they are offering that movie to sell you have little choice but to buy it online and pay a premium for them. I've had to buy a few movies made for other regions just to get them as they never released the movie in that format or version in the US.....

I think the glory days of collecting movies on disc has gone now we are seeing what happened to vinyl and VCR tapes by optical media now happening to optical media by streaming/digital services. The truly sad thing is that studios are not sharing the savings that they have by not having to give you a hard copy they are pocketing the profit and for the most part keeping prices at stupid highs. I have not checked lately but about a year ago I looked to see how much an HD digital copy of a movie was and it was I think $15 and at a store they had the same movie on disc WITH a free digital copy for either $5 more of the same price. In other words you either buy a digital copy online or buy one locally and get a free disc and case with it for the same price. I shake my head at CD vs digital music sales seeing a CD selling for $5 or less and the digital copies selling for $10 and up. You cannot resell digital copies unless they are still unredeemed from their inclusion with discs. As Bruce Willis found out when he checked to see if he could put his Amazon music collection (digital) in his will to his children.... he was dissapointed when they said NO, you don't "own" digital copies and they make it hard to back up that copy also.

I mostly listen to worship CD's in the evening or night because it helps me relax before my head hits the pillow to sleep at night. I don't really like to look at screens at night because it effects my sleep at night so this a way to reduce screen time.

Well, this is kind of embarrassing for me. I never left that 'old school' CDs and DVDs world that you talk of.

I agree. And owning hard copies is a poke in the eye to those who want us all to 'Own nothing and be happy'. Assuming that they are successful, and manage to fully implement their dystopian vision, I can well imagine that removing access to Spotify and similar services would be one of their sticks that they use to beat the non-compliant.

Cassettes? They really were a step backwards weren't they? They were better than records how?
I think cassette tapes were only really useful for playing music in cars, and other situations where vinyl was impractical. Also good for taping the Top 40 on sunday afternoon, so that you could listen later and fast forward the rubbish songs.

As people switched to digital streaming, I noticed that the price of CDs plummeted. And at the moment there's a surprisingly large number of cheap, and often mint condition, CDs available in charity shops. Many of these cost more than £10 when released, and they are now being sold for a few £s.

The strangest thing is that I've seen used cassette tapes selling for what I consider to be a high price on Ebay. Who on earth is buying these? Is it the hipster types? I just don't get it. CDs and vinyl yes, but not cassette tapes.

There is a lot of people into retro stuff first it was vinyl records and tube amps and then cassettes are now supposedly cool. Personally when I replaced most of my vinyl and cassettes with CDs I never looked back and VHS sucks compared to DVDs and Blu-Rays. The reason CD and soon DVDs plummeted was because of cheap memory prices in phones and music streaming and digital music online. More and more people don't want to own their music or they are clueless to the fact they own nothing when they go digital. CDs also are cheap because the people with computers in the past copied them or ripped the music onto their ipods or phones and then they didn't need the discs (or so they think). You don't see movies as much because they are typically harder to copy and take up a lot of space compared to music on CD. I wouldn't have a cassette album personally the tapes are too fragile and wear out along with heads wearing out on the players. DVDs are dirt cheap because a there are a huge amount of mediocre movies on them bought and watched a few times and they take up a ever growing lot of space.

Cassette tapes were great as the boombox era started because of them and stereo decks allowed you to record records on them to play in cars and portable stereo boomboxes. With a 90 minute tape you could record 2 full albums on it one on each side and when they invented auto reverse decks you didn't have to remove the tape and flip it over to listen to the other side essentially a tape could continue to play both sides till you shut it off while records could be played one side then another on top of it on a spindle drop and play the next side but after the pile finished that was it till you manually reset the records. I grew up replacing my first car radio with a high power cassette deck and it was wonderful. Now that we have digital everything you don't have to but rip CDs once and most car stereos have either support for bluetooth or external inputs for a phone. Before I got an Ipod I would rip my cds and then take the mp3 files and record them on a CD-R and my next vehicle had an MP3 CD player. With Itunes and streaming services along with cell phones and towers most folks don't even need to tune into a radio station now. I have some 8000 songs on my phone my whole CD collection and play lists
