  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is it harassment to shove your opinions down someone's throat who is not asking for your opinion?

I have a phobia (the fear of walking across the street and a fear of wide open spaces). And as a result, I use a little scooter to help me across the street or the parking lot, even though there is still fear when I cross the street. But the scooter is so helpful. When I cross the street I get extreme vertigo. But I can still walk. So a lot of people can't understand why I can walk up and down the stairs and walk around the apartment complex and yet I use the scooter to go to the park and other places. I mind my own business. But there are people who get mad that I use the scooter and yet it appears that I can walk. Some of them even would tell me their disapproving of me. Or they would stare and then shake their heads at me.

Why do they care? Why does it affect their lives? I know some people are very bluntly honest, and they are not afraid to speak their minds. But why does matter to them if it doesn't even affect them? That's what I don't get about blunt people.

I mean people shouldn't have to live their lives to satisfy other people. Right?

So my question is, isn't it harassment to shove your opinions down someone else's throat when they are not even asking, especially if that person is just minding their own business?

I am not talking about voicing your opinion in an appropriate setting like holding up signs or protesting against this or that. I am talking about personally attacking a single human being who is just trying to get by.

People think I am just lazy and choose not to walk. Or that I am taking advantage of the system. And they have no problem telling me this. And these are strangers that I don't even know and they don't know me. However, they have seen me walk in the store or walk up and down the stairs.

I would have no problem if they just ask me so they can understand.

They don't know that I am going back to school in the Fall. I am going to get training so that I can work at home. I need my scooter for this. I am doing everything I can so that I can go back to work.

A lot of times, blunt people immediately speak their opinions without trying to understand other people.

I don't know. Maybe I need to work on trying to understand people myself.

I think people judge too much because they lack understanding about love. Who cares if you want to ride a scooter? Why does that matter?

I hate it when I hear people judging others about such things. I once heard a discussion about movie subtitles. People were accusing those who don't like reading sub titles as being lazy. They seemed to glory in their own flesh as they gloated about how much they read. As if their intellectualism was greater than those who dont like reading movie sub titles. I hate subtitles because I watch a movie for the acting, the drama and all of it. If I wanted to read I wouldn't go to a play would I? I would read a book instead. Movies are about watching the acting which actors display in drama, and is done in many different ways via facial expressions and other means. Its hard to watch if you are distracted by reading subtitles. Its like going to the opera, blocking out the sound, and reading subtitles instead. Its just not the same.

I had a scooter that I took out on the bicycle trails. Sometimes I would go up to 12 miles a day on it. There was no way I could have done that much walking at my age without the scooter and I really wanted to get out in the woods and see the places I use to go to when I was younger. My son use to go with me and ride his bicycle and that helped to keep him healthy at the time.

Sorry to hear about the harassment. I sometimes get it when I park in a disabled parking bay because I am fully mobile ... people don't realize that I am a volunteer driver picking up a handicapped person. I just smile and feel superior!!

I don't know maybe you're right. I maybe need to develops thicker skin.
Well, that wasn´t meant to be the subtext of my question. I don´t think we necessarily need to grow a thicker skin when things are bothering us. Rather, it seems to be about finding good ways of expressing our discontent. :)

Are you saying I need to learn to express myself better? Because I would agree with on that.
Look, I do not really know you that well. :)
In my observation it´s something most everyone (including myself) have problems with: expressing their feelings clearly: i.e. as their feelings instead of e.g. making judgements about others´ behaviours (in this case "harassment").
