I can understand on the General Theology Board, but coming to a specific board and labeling the believers there as a cult?

Rule No. 1 - No "Flaming"
1.1
You may discuss another individual's beliefs or religious organization but you will not harass, insult, belittle, threaten, defame or flame the individual (member or non-member) as this is considered personal (ad hominem) attacks in posts, PMs and any other communication within the site. This includes, but is not limited to:
a. Directly calling another member “cultist”, “heretic” or “bigot” as these are personal attacks and are not conducive to civil discussion.
b. Calling famous individuals derogatory names (unless it is a well-known nickname) as this may be considered defamation.
1.2 You will not directly call another member or his or her religious organization a “cult”, “heretic”, “demonic” or “satanic” but you may discuss doctrines, teachings, practices or writings of other religious organizations as long as evidence (including Scripture) is provided.
1.3 You will only post negative statements about another individual’s belief or religious organization (including non-Christian religions) with objective evidence provided. Members are allowed to say “The doctrines X church is false because of Y scriptures and Z other relevant evidence”.
1.4 You will not misquote another member regardless of context. You will not quote another member in your profile including your signature without permission - such quotes will be removed.
1.5You will not directly state or otherwise imply that another member is not a Christian if he or she falls under Rule 6.5 and 6.6 and he or she does not have a hidden faith icon without providing substantiation from scripture or doctrine or historic church writtings.

is it against peoples better judgement NOt to ask stupid questions. Well seriously we are all together following the good shepherd. They crucifyed Jesus because HE asked the parishes how could they judge people when they themselves were sinners. Or as Brother wooboo quoted "rules"/ Anyways if you went into an adventist or methodist or whatever and asked if they were a cult. they would defiantely in some manner justify their beliefs based on biblical principals. GOD bless

I don't think it was a stupid question. In fact, no question asked in sincerity is stupid.

It is important to recognize that everyone thinks differently, and has a right to do so. We shouldn't expect people to be just like us in the manner in which they think about things. For, if we do this, we will only push people away, thus failing to accomplish the goal that Christ has ordained for us to work towards--unity in Spirit, and in Truth.

Woo, thank you for answering my question. Now another question, why has a post labeling The Seventh Day Adventists as a cult been allowed to stay?

I really don't know. It was reported twice, and yet it remains.

I suppose when it comes to the SDA forum such rules don't apply. :sigh:

wooo I wasn't saying it as he was stupid. well if you reported me I hope you never be opionated and live through your righteousness. Trust and obey If im the worse thing that crosses your path in life and I in no means told catlover he wsnt a christian but it was a sort of obvious question. I hope everyone realizes that I never meant to hurt anybody, but it seems people actually seek out reasons to find people worse off than them. I hope I can really feel anything and wow I thought we was allowed to have a state of mind. Catlover I helped you defend the fact that mentally challenged people can have a purpose filled life. But alas we always look at the negative in life. When do we all get along? man I really hope GOD doesn't judge me as haresh as people have Thank you for reporting me join the group of people i could care less about . & until you stop sinning call me up and well go out for pizza or something.

I don't think anyone reported you. But I will say that you need to be a little more sensitive with your choice of words.

You may mean well, but people can very easily take what you say the wrong way.

For example, was it really necessary to say, "Thank you for reporting me join the group of people i could care less about"?

That wasn't very nice of you to say that. You should care about your brothers and sisters in Christ. And it is because we care about you that we are telling you how we feel about this.

Dear Jonathan, you weren't reported. :)

I have noticed some offensive posts on Christian Forums being left up. One referred to a women facing crisis pregancies as "harlots". In that same post it referred to what Catholics believed as "crap".

HERE I notice a post referring to Adventists as being in a cult.

So I am confused.

I have heard SDA's referred to as a cult. People even told me, don't join the SDA Church; it's a cult.

Can anyone tell me why SDA's are called a cult? No one seems to be able to give be an answer.

They say these things because they assume us to be legalistic for keeping the 7th day Sabbath holy, and following dietary laws.

Since the majority of Christians don't do these things, and we are in the minority, they refer to us as being a cult.

Historically we were considered a cult by most folks for years, and still are by some. The definition of a cult is of course somewhat subjective, but it usually involves a few elements.

Foremost is the fact that we hold "heterodox" beliefs on subjects...ie...different that orthodox...ie...unusual...ie....wrong (at least in their opinion of course :) )

The usual beliefs we are criticized for are:

a. Sabbath
b. State of the Dead
c. Hell (in fact, you can't even discuss our view of hell in the usual parts of the Christians Only forums)
d. The investigative judgement, because it is believed to mean that the atonement was not complete at the cross.
e. Our view of the scapegoat, which some say makes Satan a sacrifice of sorts.
f. Our acceptance of a prophet.
g. Certain elements of our Christology (that Jesus took on some aspects of sinful nature, though this is not fully agreed on even in the church).

Anyway, historically the tide turned somewhat with the work of Martin, who had formerly included us in his book "Kingdom of the Cults." He entered into dialogue with Adventists back in the 50's, and eventually came to the conclusion that we are not a cult, but do have some heterodox teachings. Since he has been one of the foremost experts in this area many accept his diagnosis, others do not.

This event (the dialogue with evangelicals) also played a big role in Adventism later on. THe dialogue was seen by some Adventists as a sell-out. They questioned some of the answers given to the evangelicals, and said that they were an attempt to soften traditional (historic) Adventism. The book "Questions on Doctrine" which came out of the dialogue has been a source of controversy for years.

Many of the current conservative independent ministries can trace their existance back to this controversy. The theological issues at the forefront were the nature of Christ (at that time the vast majority of members believed Jesus took on Adam's fallen nature, but the Adventists representing the GC said that only a minority did), and the investigative judgement.

Another historical note, probably the majority of the early founders of Adventism could not have posted in the Christian's Only section here because they rejected the Trinity, and some were semi-arian, believing Jesus to, at some distant point in the past, had a beginning (ie, not eternal). Part of this was the rejection of anything "Catholic", since the creeds etc. were decisions by the church, and terms such as Trinity did not occur in the Scriptures.

Truthfully if folks consider us a cult, that is fine. Labels are just that. The whole cult label is just a way for folks to classify who they think is right, and who they think is wrong. But until they prove a person wrong, the label makes little difference. It is just a way to keep folks from even considering the position.

I LOVE Leo Schreven. He rocks the boat a little and that's never a bad thing.

I'd welcome him in here with open arms, for sure!!!

I noticed that our only moderator, Daveleau, has not been around much lately; his last activity was April 23. I don't know if anyone is moderating our forum in his absence. The post in question most definitely should have been deleted, according to the CF rules.
