Is it a sin to watch the non-blasphemous episodes of certain TV shows?

Hi,

I do enjoy some television shows that mock the Gospel, but these shows do not all the time. These include South Park, Key & Peele, and Monty Python. I enjoy the non-blasphemous parts/episodes of these shows I mentioned, and cut out the offensive episodes.

In South Park, Jesus has appeared in some episodes. In my opinion, the show crosses the line when Jesus appears in the show. Some episodes that I do not like are “Fantastic Easter Special”, “Red Sleigh Down”, and “200/201” because of the way Jesus is portrayed. I personally find South Park to be intelligent and clever because it tackles current social issues and pop culture and portrays social issues and pop culture in funny ways. It is also interesting to see the four boys go on adventures and get into scenarios kids would get into on stereotypical television.

In Key & Peele, Jesus appears in one skit, “Mary Magdalene’s Pimp”. I personally find this skit offensive, because in my opinion, Jesus and comedy are two things that should never mix. Jesus is shown in a comedic way forgiving Mary Magdlene’s pimp. This crosses the line in my opinion. I also enjoy watching Key & Peele because like South Park, it makes fun of current events and pop culture, which I don’t have a problem with television movies and movies making fun of.

In Monty Python, there is an entire movie mocking Jesus, “Monty Python’s Life of Brian”. I’ve never seen this movie, and I don’t ever plan on watching this movie because of how offensive and blasphemous it sounds. Brian, a fictional character, is believed to be the “Messiah”, and does everything Jesus does in the New Testament. Not surprisingly, this movie even caused a lot of controversy. I enjoy watching Monty Python because the humor is silly and random. In “Monty Python and The Holy Grail”, God appears as grumpy for about a minute. I just ignore this scene because it is not a major part of the plot of the movie, and I watch the rest of the movie.

Is this okay for a Christian to do? What do you think? Thanks!

It is definitely not profitable. Guard your heart and mind. Remember when first saved how differently you saw the world. How sin was much more apparent and things like these programs had no meaning? I would say just the fact you need to ask tells you that you ought to feel concerned.

I actually haven't watched these shows lately, but I don't want to resist these shows, because I like the humor, and It's not a sin to have a sense of humor.

Ephesians 5:4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving

Just kidding :) But yeah, we can still have a sense of humour.

There has never been a non-blasphemous TV show and never will be. It comes from the world, it will promote the worldly things, not from God.
This seems rather strange coming from a person whose avatar is a TV show

The problem I have with those types of things is the general irreverence. So much of it crosses the line when it comes to love and respect for others all in the name of humor. Comparing today's society with the past, there's an obvious decrease in common moral decency. Hence, the existence of the programming mentioned above.

It depends on what your inner witness is saying. If the Holy Spirit in you is at rest. He’s the boss, so if it’s ok with Him. If on the other hand your getting a red flag thrown up in your inner most being, well that’s a different matter. It’s your inner personal relationship with Christ that rules.

It all depends on the content of the show. The problem with many shows is that they slip bad content in and you end up watching it because you don't know it is coming (bad language, sex, derogatory religious content, etc.). Most of the time Hollywood will feed you just enough unrighteous content in TV shows that it grieves the Holy Spirit, but not enough to make it so offensive that you will turn it off. Movies are far worse.

1 John 5:17a - All unrighteousness is sin:
If we are being entertained by unrighteousness as opposed to committing it ourselves, it is probably a sin as well.

Proverbs 24:9 - The thought of foolishness is sin: and the scorner is an abomination to men.

If a TV show causes us to think foolishly it is sin.
