I think it is how you use the word and what is in your heart when you use the word that determines if it is a sin.
Ah, yes, intent is important when deciding whether or not we have sinned. If I smack my thumb with a hammer, I can almost assure you an expletive will leave my mouth. I don't think God approves of it, and I do ask his forgiveness, but I don't let it nag me. I just try to do better next time.

What I find far more troublesome is the use of profanity to hurt others (hopefully something we Christians seldom or never do) or to make my language more colorful (which I still do more often than I like). In my opinion there is no excuse for using foul language to insult another person. I also find that as I grow in my relationship with God, the use of colorful language is more and more distasteful in general. If I'm a true follower of Christ, why should I engage in something He would find offensive?

You are right in saying that cuss words are just more extreme versions of explitives(sp?) but the Bible says that you will be accountable for every idle word.
Matthew 12:36 - But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
In context:
12:33 "Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. 34You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. 35The god man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. 37For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned" This is Jesus speaking BTW. lies, explitives, blasphemy are all included in these and it also includes sarcasm which I have a problem with.
Yes you can be forgiven for this but you also should repent and speak goodness instead. If you had a bad day, say you had a difficult day instead of some other explitive even if it is a word that doesn't offend anyone. heh and sarcaticly saying "Oh, I had a great day today. I worked a double shift at work" isn't a good idea either. I had to work from 10:45 AM to 10:15 PM and it was hard on my flat feet and leg muscles to stand and walk and work all day when I'm not used to it. Does that change your view any?
