It is best not to drink alcohol at all. It is a poison, it will damage your brain, it can addict you, and you cannot really discern what drunkenness is exactly. (It could be "relaxed," "slobbering crazed brawler" or anything in between actually.)

However if you are stupid enough to drink here's some legal advice and some ways to avoid further sins: don't get drunk, do heed the legal age whereever you are (that can range from 18 in Mexico and Australia to, if I remember, around 25 in some Islamic countries-if they allow it at all, no country I know of allows 15 year olds to drink) and NEVER drive a vehicle after even one drink.

ha, i agree with both......if u are underage and are drinking, then u are breaking a law, which yes is a sin. If u are drinking with the intent to get drunk.....yup it's a sin. The bible does tell us that a little wine is good for our stomachs. And anyone who is in the thinking that Jesus turned water into grape juice......oh my my.

I prefer to look at this question less from the view of "is it sin" and more from the view "how does it affect my witness".

Am I putting forth an effectual witness if i am seen drinking at the ball game or the local bar? What is your first and most immediate thought when you see someone drinking? What might other peoples thoughts be?

Considering the social stigma attached to drinking - am i acting in love of others by drinking? Appearances can be very decieving but they can also be very damaging, whether they are real or not. Out of love of others we should be willing to change our lifestyle so as not to present a stumbling block to either believers or non-believers.

If one does drink occasionally, I do believe, that as a responsible witness for Christ it should be done in private and in moderation.

God Bless

Being part of the Salvation Army we choose not to drink, but this is only because we help many people that are reformed drunks and that, so logically, we keep the drink away from them and we don't encourage them by us drinking.
The Salvation Army has the same view as most people here, is that it's ok to drink if you wish (in moderation), but drunkenness is a sin!
If drinking a little wine was a sin, then the Catholic and Anglican churches have been sinning for years! hehe. I don't think so...

There is hardly a stronger witness than a man or woman who can have one drink and stop there while carrying on a conversation about Christ and His power over sin and death, demonstrating both the freedom and obedience inherint to the Gospel. This is especially important for young people to see as they grow up in this crooked and depraved generation. Exercising the Spiritual fruit of self-control over all things addictive (like Ibuprofin, alcohol, television, chocolate, sex, breaking the speed limit, and even being a self-righteous and judgmental "Christian") is the strongest testimony that can be given God's Love and to the Strength and Power of Christ's triumph over the sin of this world and our flesh.

And Susan, in Matt. 5:22, our Lord has some sobering words for all of us any time we find ourselves so wise in our own eyes so as to call our brothers and sisters names. I appreciate your zeal for Christ. But please do not call me stupid.

Peace to all who seek Christ,

Two questions are relevent here:

1) Why is the person drinking?

Drinking to ignore one's problems or to get drunk is wrong. Drinking while socializing is not.

2) What are the possible effects of one's intoxication?

Drunkedness is wrong because we lose control of what we are doing. People don't plan to go for drunken joyrides and kill innocent children, but it does happen. When you give up control, you take responsibility for everything that could happen. Losing control of oneself is no different than letting a murderer out of jail. The sin does not lie in what does happen, because that is out of your control. It lies in what could happen. At least, that is my opinion.

I totally agree with sklippstein. I dont think there is anything wrong with having a small drink here and there. I have on question for sklippstein though. Where does the Bible tell us that a little wine is good for our stomachs. I know it doesn't say it is bad but where does it talk about it being good for us. Just wondering. Thanks

i think getting drunk is wrong...because you don't have control of yourself.

as far as drinking goes...i think that you need to go by your own conviction. if you're convicted by it...don't do it. and don't do it next to someone who thinks it's wrong either. other than that, i think it's fine.
