I don't like to get "smashed". The thought process becomes slow and sometimes unreliable and dangerous. While sober the mind is very efficient and a person is very sharp, but while drunk the person is kind of dull.

Personally, I like to have a beer or two once in a while - but I try to avoid getting drunk. I don't like to be in that kind of weakened state of mind.

Thoughts?

God bless ya!

If you're a "happy drunk" who just sits and giggles while drinking with buddies every so often, I don't see a problem (My best friend seems to be like this... if she manages to get drunk she just sits with a stupid grin plastered on her face). However, if you know that you're prone to anger and doing all sorts of stupid things while you're drunk, then don't do it. My dad was one of those people, though he wasn't exactly pleasant sober, he was a million times worse drunk.

getting completely drunk and being incoherant and unable to look after yourself is not really immoral more anti-social. No one wants to watch you throw up, wet yourself and start fights, it is just not nice. I have found that most people ( i said most) need to do this once or twice to find out and then they grow out of it.

Don't get me wrong, i like a drink as much as the next person but I also know where to draw the line.

How does this make drunkenness immoral?

Well, you have to ask yourself "on what basis is getting drunk immoral". I cant think of a reason why drinking should be immoral in the same sense as hurting an animal or stealing a wallet, but I dont think getting smashed is good for your character.

Drinking is one of those vices that makes you feel good about yourself for doing nothing, it makes you into a person who spends his time as a sagging lump when you could be learning a new skill or enjoying the company of friends. And those arent very good character traits at all.

Being comletely wasted just isn't fun, IMO. I stumble around a lot and sometimes get angry for no apparent reason. Plus I just can't choke down most alcoholic drinks because they taste so bad.
At 17, you shouldnt be choking down alcoholic drinks in the first place ;)

Not getting drunk is immoral. Being drunk symbolizes the human dominance. I don't think any animal other than the giraffe that gets drunk or gets high.

Actually, there are places with alcoholic monkeys. They sneak up on tourists and try to steal a drink whenever they can. Saw a rather amusing tv show on it.

And what does getting drunk have to do with human dominance?

When someone drinks to the point of drunkeness, it means they value the pleasure and fun of drinking more than their own reason, since they lose their rational abilities.
It is precisely this kind of value disorder (love a lesser good over a greater one) that sin consists of.

So yes, it is immoral to get drunk and to drink with the intention of getting drunk; to "accidentally" get drunk, that is, do not realize and drink more than you should, is also wrong but is not as serious.

I've never been drunk myself (Well, there was that incident with the cough syrup, but how was I to know I'd react that way to a normal adult dose?! :sorry: ) but I don't know how much longer it'll stay that way, especially if I go back to Canada. You can drink at 18 there, and they have Moxie's restaurants, and Moxie's restaurants have this delightful little thing called a Bellini... :D

Well considering most of you are under-age Americans... Definately yes, it is aganst the law in (I believe) all 50 states now. However, once you are of age, a few drinks in moderation are probably OK. Coming from a person who used to be a huge binge drinker, I think there is a huge amount of caution you should be contious of.

1. I got to the point of sometimes drinking a case ( that's 24) of beer or more in a single sitting. there's a problam with that.

2. Drowning your sarrows in it are never a good thing. I used to see myself as taking a vacation, but that only justified more drinking and for all intense purposes made things worse.

3. Achohol makes you do stupid thing, giggly or angry, Christian or not.
-As a Christian, any number of these stupid things can be, or lead to sin.If you
suseptable to doing these stupid things, then it's probably best to lay off.

-For the secular person, these stupid thing can lead to achoholism, unwanted
pregnancy, violance, and trouble with the law to name a few.

So my point is that the drinking itself isn't as immoral as your reactions to it.

If one is an alcoholic -- no.

If one drinks and drives, and injures or kills someone and/or destroys someone's property and/or is driving dangerously -- no.

If one is inclined to be an angry, abusive drunk -- no.

If one is drinking to drown one's feelings - no. (The problem will come back anyway, and it's made worse when compounded by a hangover.)

Barring those conditions -- it really doesn't matter one way or the other, and falls neatly within the conditions laid out in Romans 14.

I suggest absinthe. It apparently tends not to affect capacity for rational thinking, yet still reduces inhibitions. If I could find some around here, I'd put it to the test.

Oh, and Chajara, the drinking age isn't 18 across Canada, just in certain provinces. (Alberta, Quebec, and some of the Maritime provinces, IIRC.)

I'm like that as well; I'm also approximately 5 times more likely to dance, which is fun.

Maybe it's just because I haven't yet had many bad experiences with alcohol, but I've found that it's fine, as long as you're safe about it (which is true of anything). Being drunk can be dangerous, just as driving a car can be dangerous; but both allow certain benefits, and those benefits can be had if one is willing to risk the dangers for them. For the most part, I've found the benefits to be worth the dangers.

I've also never understood the purpose of drinking in moderation -- alcohol tastes bad almost as a rule (except for nice wines... mmmm.... ) and I see little point in drinking if you're not getting drunk.

Oh, okay. I was in Alberta for a good three weeks. I only got carded once at Moxie's and once at the casino in Edmonton though, so most of the places we went to it wouldn't have mattered anyhow. :p
