  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Heliocentrism was only briefly a problem and only because Tycho Brahe's data (decades of it) pointed to the sun going round the earth. Galileo just didnt have enough data at the time he confronted the establishment... if he'd have waited for data at least he would have the scientists behind him instead of no one... then when it was too late they got the data.
From what I read on Galileo it's wasn't his theory of heliocentrism that was offensive as much as it was his arrogant spirit. After his death , heliocentrism was the normal (including in the church) even without hard evidence to support it.
This is the same with christians , sometimes it's not the message that is offensive as much as it's our spirit toward others.

The OP was asking why we feel the need to argue about this, and the subsequent posts provided that answer.

The YEC's are on a mission to show that evolution and an old earth are unbiblical and, thus, dangerous to Christianity. Thus, they feel a strong need to present this view aggressively, since anything that threatens Christianity must be dealt with aggressively.

TE's believe that this mission of the YEC's is, itself, dangerous to Christianity and is losing souls to the Kingdom, and thus must be fought against with equal measure.

Personally, I can say that if YEC's believed what they did, but were not on this mission, with their ministries, books, lectures, etc, I would have little or no motivation to discuss these matters.

One of my non-Christian friends told me that
"It [Young Earth Creationism] makes Christians look stupid and blind."

Do we want to seem stupid and blind to a world of unbelievers? Unbelievers can be lost because of Young Earth Creationism, and it makes Theistic Evolution believers, like myself, deeply uncomfortable, and may make less mature Christians question their faith.
I think this is one reason many TE's promote or cling to their views.

"cling"? No. Simply understand and accept, with full peace and confidence. What is frustrating and, indeed, uncomfortable, is seeing souls lost to the Kingdom of God as a result of YEC teaching. We must do something to stop it.
