Irish Vote Landslide ‘Yes’ to Abortion

In an historic poll, citizens of the Republic of Ireland appear to have voted overwhelmingly in favour of repealing the Eighth Amendment of the Irish Constitution which effectively banned abortion by limiting it to extreme medical circumstances not including fatal foetal abnormality. While the counting continues the 'No' vote opposition has effectively conceded defeat. Based on exit polls the ‘Yes’ vote may be as high as 68% compared to a ‘No’ vote of around 32%. The ‘Yes’ vote appears to have secured a majority in all age groups apart from the over 65s.

Under the new rules, termination will be allowed up to the 12th week (certified by a Doctor) subject to the mother observing a 72-hour cooling off period. Termination beyond 12 weeks is only lawful where two Doctors certify that the foetus has not reached viability; that continuing the pregnancy poses a serious risk to the woman, and that termination is necessary to avert the risk.

The vote follows an intense campaign where both ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ camps encouraged expatriate Irish to come home to vote.

The abortion ‘Yes’ vote is seen as another sign of the waning influence of the Catholic Church in Ireland. This vote follows on from media reports of child abuse in Catholic institutions starting in the 1990s and culminating in the findings of the 9-year long Ryan Commission, published in 2009, detailing endemic child abuse by Catholic clergy and institutions. More recently, in 2015, Ireland also voted overwhelmingly (62% ‘Yes’ to 38% ‘No’) in favour of Same Sex Marriage. In June 2017 Ireland elected Leo Varadkar as its first, same sex partnered and openly gay, Prime Minister.

This in no small part was a result of the tragic and emanently avoidable death of Savita Halappanavar, who died from complications of a septic miscarriage, where under the constitution her unviable foetus was accorded the same legal rights as she was until it was too late to save her.

While I'm strictly prolife it's encouraging that Ireland is finding some balance in this hotly controversial issue.
What makes you think that approving the murder of babies is *some balance*? Ireland has made a disastrous decision and will pay for it.

Good. Women should decide these things for themselves rather than having a - dare I say nanny - government dictating to them.

The country of Ireland is led by an open homosexual, with the country also recently voting to make all aspects of the demonic life-style of homosexuality, "legal". It comes as no surprise that a nation that has sadly turned it back on what little of the God of the Bible they had, being a "Roman Catholic" country, that they should go further down the slippery slope, into mass immoral and unethical lives, and now have voted by a large margin to make "legal" the murder of the unborn, but very much living child. This is now a nation, like the UK and USA and others, who are more like Sodom and Gomorrah, in the Old Testament. IF, only IF, they Lord would once again be Merciful, without which there is NO hope. The God of the Holy Bible, is The God Who is ABLE.

Oh no! Not an open homosexual! How dare a sinner lead a country! Not like good, non-sinful Christian leaders like Donny Trump.

I disagree, I don't approve of abortion either but I think they made the right decision to leave the option open in some cases. They don't have abortion on demand as if it were contraception, so there's that.

that is not my point. As much as I don't like Trump, he is not trying to "champion" anything that he is, or any immoral or unethical things. The leader of Ireland has made sure that he is openly anti God and Holy Bible, which Trump is not.

"They don't have abortion on demand", but the door has been opened...

He seems to be trying to champion racist policies against immigrants.

I suppose Donny isn't so-called "anti God and Holy Bible", in the sense that he's not hostile to it. But to think that a man like that - twice (?) divorced, personal philosophy of "revenge", long history of not paying people who work for him, can't even pronounce books of the Bible correctly, women's genital grabber, racist - is anything even close to a Christian is....laughable, at best. At worst, it's insulting to those of us who actually are Christian and try to live our lives that way.

Trump is NOT a Christian in the Bible sense. But he is not openly anti, nor does he advocate anything that is against the Word of God. His personal life is another thing.

I am interested why would any Baptist Christian use "Ringo", unless it is your name? But, to have a picture of that guy who openly, with the others in his band, promoted everything against what the Bible is about?

Not "being explicitly anti" doesn't mean he's on your side.

Oh really? Please proceed, governor.
