• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Unfortunately, most of the time Asperger's and Christianity never seem to cross paths. Which isn't good, obviously. I know a woman named Stephanie Mayberry has written a sort of memoir on what it's like to be us, but by and large the only people that really know about Asperger's in the church are those with friends and loved ones that have it, and they never think about it in the context of the faith, it seems.

That has to change. I'm considering maybe one day in the future writing some books on the topic. The 3 that need to be written are:

1. A case for Christianity, geared towards Aspies/how to live the Christian life as an Aspie
2. What Christian (presumably NT) parents can do to raise their child in a Christian manner
3. What churches can do to put us to good use and how to accommodate people like us in churches (nothing radical--just sort of a "here's how to spot the symptoms and here are some programs/ideas that can be added on to churches that Aspies could participate in without feeling left out)

seekwn I saw this post. You asked any 'Groups' ... I have Aspergers Syndrome and I too live in New Zealand but what I would do is if I wanted to know about it, contact 'Autism New Zealand' and ask them if there are any groups going in your area. As for Online, I do not know to be honest here.

Books about Christian and Aspies - Do not know as I dont even search that kind of thing up nor read it.

As for the Tony Atwood thing, I am not so sure about that one. But good question Sabertooth with that one. I shall look it up when I have time I guess.

Good point NIrelandGrace. I didnt think of that like so but yes, that would be a good point there to start looking for them or at least ask people. Thats what I would do. But I guess I tend to not join the online groups, my real life is ok as it is with my Aspergers Syndrome and I know I have it, I also know my boyfriend (of 2 months, 3 months on March 1st) has it too. I know a friend of mine with Aspergers Syndrome as well.

I would have thought here, in Christian Forums would have been a good place to start when looking for online groups for Aspies.

I'm not on the autistic spectrum myself, but two of my sons and my daughter are. My daughter is the only one of the three who uses the internet to keep in touch with other people, but interestingly she doesn't belong in any autism-related forums online.

Alistair, I hope you can find a community of Aspies you can feel at home with, whether it be physically local to yourself or online.

Not sure about the books - maybe Google Christian books in a genre you like?

God bless,

Gillian
