Asolo, Italy

Original home of the Asolo Theater, now residing in Sarasota Florida.

The Historic Asolo Theater is an 18th Century Theater from Asolo, Italy. The Asolo Theater was originally built in 1798 within the castle of exiled Queen of Cyprus, Caterina Cornaro. The Ringling Museum’s first director, A. Everett “Chick” Austin, Jr. made the theater a part of the Museum collection in 1950. It has since made an impression on many generations of Sarasota residents and tourists until it was closed to the public in the late 1990s. It was removed from its former building and has been under restoration for nearly two years. It was earmarked to be re-installed in the Museum’s new Visitors Pavilion after being completely restored as part of the Master Plan. The theater’s reveal is a highly anticipated event scheduled for June 29th. Theater patrons can look forward to a varied schedule of theater, music, dance, film, family programming and lectures to begin in the fall.

Asolo as it was in 1951

This theater was seen by John Ringling on a trip to Italy in the mid 1900's. There he fell in love with it. After much negotiation he purchased it and had it dismantled by hand, each piece numbered, shipped to his home in Sarasota Florida and there painstakingly and exactingly reassembled.

I have had the honor and privilege of having attended many plays and performances in this breathtaking structure.

It fell into disrepair due to lack of funds in the 1980' and 90's but has since been restored.

The Asolo Theater Company has since moved into modern accommodations on the Sarasota Campus of the Florida State University and is planned to have a prolific theater season this year!

"Nobody Don't Like Yogi" starring Howard, a member of the Asolo Theatre Company, plays Jan. 5-27.
"The Parisian Woman" opens the Florida State University/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training season, playing Nov. 1-19.
And, "Black Nativity" plays Dec. 14-17.

In 2006, after more than two years of painstaking restoration, America’s only 18th century European Theater made a triumphant encore! The jewel-like theater has been reset in the beautiful new Visitors Pavilion just inside the historic Gatehouse on the Ringling Museum estate.

Designed to honor a queen, the newly equipped theater is now ideally suited for today’s discerning patrons of the performing arts. Whether seated in the orchestra, or in the rising tiers, each audience member is afforded an uncommon intimacy with the performers. As the house lights dim and the curtains part, the gilded ornamentation and simulated jewels gracing both the proscenium and parapets reflect the brilliance of the artistry on stage.

The restored Historic Asolo Theater serves as a performance venue and cultural resource for the Ringling Museum and the Florida State University Center for the Performing Arts by presenting a diverse roster of performances staged in partnership with area performing arts organizations, guest artists, and artist presenters.
