• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

More like difficulties is what i mean.

Like i have dyslexia, possible dyspraxia, undiagnosed ADHD (i think) and some other related issues. Don't class myself as disabled though.

In the UK it's called Learning difficulties :)

But like i say - welcome!

I don't like that term, I perfer to be neurodiverse - just like Einstein :D

Well yeah for now it's stuck on us :)

Don't like the term disability either. Though what conflicts is that we need disabled rights at work and in education so we can learn equally with others.

First im Brtish but yeah if i was American i'd be under the same act. Like i said above i am under disabled rights act.

Yet i don't see myself as disabled. Nor do others. You could look at it as our perceptions are different ( also no person is the same soour abilities will be different!).

Current society has a requirement that we see and do things a certain way (perhaps linear). It seems limited and most people have the ability to fulfill that. But because we perceive things a little differently we cnnot maximise our potential in society. Others see that as a weakness and can even assume we are stupid.

Now ok call it disabled if you will but you are putting a severe label on yourself, one that is seen as we must treat him/her as special and tread lightly. Now you could count that as most disabilties.

So no - i don't like to see it as disabled i just have different perceptions. :)

(btw also for clarification - i was born with hearing difficulties that cleared up at a young age).

Naw i am not offended or hurt :)

Great post Amoeba. - I agree exactly with what you are saying.

I don't see it (dyspraxia) as a learning disability. - I have not been disabled (stopped) from doing anything I want to do because of it. I may occassionally go about achieving something in a different way to others, but I reach the same goal.

Up until about 18 months ago - I would not even have put a label on my "condition". But suddenly at work it has become an issue. I have always had problems recalling facts and figures at the snap of a finger, but it has never been a big deal to me - I coped with it - looked up the info and stuff.

Suddenly at work it is a problem because I can't instantly recall certain facts ( I should add that this in theory does not hinder my ability to do my job - it is not a requirement or skill required in the job I do). I still do not consider that I have a disability - what I do think though is that it is constructive bullying by my line manager. As I said it is not a requirement or necessity for the job, but she is trying to make out it is.

I love my job and most of the people in my office, but she is making my life miserable. Another person in the office, who like me has a university degree has the same problems and he is "bullied" for it too.

Sorry guys, just had to vent.

I understand.

I've been to my docs lately (and he has little understanding i think) - about further help and further diagnosis. He refused and even said i shouldn't be labelled. We need the "label" for work purposes.

I need a further one because i have major difficulties with concentration and social and sesnsory issues (though i get on well in very small groups). Im slow at absorbing info.

That is why we need the label. For equal opportunities at work and at school.

So if you dont want to put a lable on us how come society had rights for people with disabilites? If you dont consider your self as disabled why are you saying you have disabilites acts? To me that doesnt make sence, but what do I know, I am only a 17 year old girl who doesnt know what she is saying and arguring on a topic that isnt even close to arguring about. Its my fault for starting this argurement and I personaly apolagize.

Hi. Here. Reluctantly. Mine: dyscaculia. But I'd much prefer to write "return to sender." It's nothing I want, I hate it, but I can't change the fact that I suck at math, always have and it will always be a struggle. Part of me thinks, if I just try harder I'll get it. And that it's not real. I don't want it to be real, because I want to be like anyone else who can do math. Also, it is a disability. Not a physical one of course, but it is an inabiltity to learn properly. That's a disability, right? There's all kinds of disabilities, and not just the ones you see. Just my two cents, spend it wisely.

I've had a disability in math since I was young. I would take my tests at the back of the room with a teacher's aid using modified tests. I had to be in a special math class...
When I left public school, i was placed in my own math class to work at my own pace. They brought me up from a 3rd grade level to an 8th grade level. I started there in 8th grade and graduated from the school.
When I got to college, I never thought to address my learning disability. I just tried my best; but for math- it was not good enough.
I started out in Math 004 when I should have been in a nonexistent Math 003. I failed it twice before passing...
To pass the class the third time around; I worked hard over the summer with a tutor- covering each thing that the professor would go over. It worked- i earned my best grade in math.... a C.
Math 21 was harder.... but with working over the summer and never taking it in the spring semester; I passed. Math 22 was just too hard- I could not get it. I spent too much time on reviewing thing and the concepts were too much to go over during the summer. It was taking too long to learn it time.
Notice how I said too long to learn. Even people with learning disabilities can learn math. It just takes longer to learn it. We have to work extra hard and do things the way we do. We do not learn the same way. This time- I was able to take a Computer Science class to substitute as my last math class. I'm not giving up on it; I'm just done with it. Math has cause to much heartache because it is so hard and in my world it is meaningless. I do not need it to be a writer....
I hate working hard on things that don't matter in my life. But in order to get where I needed to be; it was a meaningless requirement that I had to care about....
