What do you do about internet security and virus protection?

I've had AVG free for a while now and thought my computer was relatively clean. It caught a virus recently and I took the steps to remove it.

Then I started getting these pop-up ads even when I wasn't visiting pages with pop up ads.

Then it appeared something was key-logging my typing - because I'd type a url or search term and my cursor kept disappearing.

Going to suggested websites to download specific software had my browser redirected to Google, or a page that said the the site wasn't on their servers.

Finally booted up in safemode and downloaded the software I was looking for and it turns out I had quite a few Trojans on my puter. Ugh.

What do you do for your Internet Security?

I use 'E-set smart security'.
Also have a new router.. we had to upgrade since we're getting 65mb /dl, so it has 8 channels. We're only using like 3 right now.. so it can be upped quite a lot when it becomes available... anywho the router also acts like a firewall, very useful.

Other then that I don't need anything. Personally don't get any spyware, viruses, malware, trojans etc.

I've pretty much put on only what my Dad and bro (the computer people) told me would be best.

I have AVG, SpyBot - Search and Destroy, MalwareBytes, SUPERAnti Spyware, and CCleaner (although CCleaner is more for cleaning cookies, history, and registry stuffs).

I have AVG set to run a scheduled scan every other day and the others I run once a week or so. They work pretty well. My netbook's been pretty clean so far....

Forget AVG, it's usless. I'd recommend actually buying a virus protection, something like AVAST or Norton Internet Security.

I've heard bad things about Norton. Last time we used it, my Dad almost threw the computer out the window. >.>

Yeah I remember reading when people say "I USE NORTON"
Then you were supposed to laugh

Yeah, I would agree with that. I remember I had it way back in the day and it was horrid and I actually got rid of it. I now only use it because it came with my computer and they fixed it and has been very useful. lol.

A friend of mine said they have improved DRASTICALLY.

Much like everything else dealing with computer, the top quickly slides down as well as the bottom slides up.

I run two of each.

I also wipe my hard drive usually once a month if not more and start from scratch (I save my personal files, music, movies, pictures to an alternate drive so I can wipe my master drive a million times and lose nothing.)

That's what I've used and it's been the best for me. A friend of mine, who is management IT, said this is what he uses. It works. It's also a no brainer to use.

Be sure to get the one that has all the types of protection on one disk. "Kaspersky Internet Security". I think that's the one.

Care to qualify the opinion that "AVG is useless"? If you've had bad experiences with it some detail would be useful, otherwise your post is easily countered by someone else saying "AVG is great, Norton is useless".

I wouldn't say it's "useless" - but it didn't pick up what this did:

The number of results is similar to what I got when I ran the program in the video - and I don't have the problems now that I described in the OP.

With CCleaner, you want to run it before you restart/shut down your computer in order to purge nasty stuff while it is still in memory and hasn't had the opportunity to write to your system files yet. Then do a SpyBot run, same principle. Spybot of course needs to be updated regularly, and you should immunize after every update. Antivirus programs these days are generally good about auto-updating and background scanning.

Did you make sure it was updated? In any case, I would extend this to say, "Don't download any toolbar, period."

It's because those are probably adware and not viruses. Doesn't even have to be anything risky at all about a lot of stuff that is classed as adware. They're just useless and in the way so the programs get rid of them. Some adware might gather data and be more malicious but I doubt all of those were that dangerous.

AVG for example searches for viruses that may be of harm to your computer, it's not an adware scanner. No virus protection is flawless anyway so some malicious software might go off the radar. That's why there are constant updates.
