[ From Battie ] --Finally, go to Start --> Run and type "msconfig." Go to the startup tab. Expand the window so that you can see the whole list at once. Take a screenshot (hit alt + prt sc and paste it into a program like MS Paint) and post it here. We can tell you if there is anything fishy that should be removed.

[ Edit : Just realized I tried to copy/paste in unprescribed fashion ...will try again ]

Okay , I found the list and " blued it out " but when right clicking on it , no window for copy/paste comes up ... I did notice " Armor2net " on the list , and that is a Firewall which I tried some time ago , but have since removed ( I thought ) from my computer ( It's not listed under All programs of on The Add/Remove List ) , It seems it should be taken off the " startup list ", and possibly should be searched for in regedit and program files and if found , removed from there also .

This seems to be a common problem - One removes a program and yet some of it lingers behind ...I still have avast ( anti-spy program ) listed on Add/Remove after having uninstalled and hunted down all traces and deleted them .. when I ask Add/Remove to take it off - It says it can't find it ... But if it can't be found ... why is it still listed ? Unless some of it is still there ? I was able to get it to go away on a friends computer by deleting all mention of it in " Program Files " and " regedit " , but not yet on my own ... Could these partial remainders of previously tried programs be the cause of glitches , such as IE shutting down ?

Warm Regards ,

wm

Well , I tried again ... couldn't find a way to " Expand the window " and hitting " alt + prt sc " didn't seem to do anything ? I'm probably missing something , as much of this is new to me .

I'll try the suggested scan next .

You won't see anything when you hit the printscreen button. The shot of the screen is copied to the clipboard, just like when you copy normal text. When you open your image editor you'll be able to paste the image in. However, it sounds like you know what you're doing well enough to recognize anything suspicious (but you may still want to paste it here just in case). Go ahead and uncheck the entries for programs you no longer use/have. Sometimes uninstallers are a little sloppy.

As far as running three firewalls at once: I wouldn't recommend it, but I don't know of any specific problems it would cause, either. If all of your firewalls were free, I would just turn the other two off and stick with the built in Windows one. However, if you paid for any of them, you may want to use that instead so that you don't waste money. If you still have problems after that, you can try rotating them to see which causes the errors.

Username effects are the Glow or Shadow colors you see around peoples usernames on CF.If you're using Firefox, you won't see them. I love them!

I used Maxthon for several months before switching to Firefox and it was good but what is this 'username effects' you speak of? I don't know what you are referring to.

I got interested by the thread title for the very reason that IE vs. Firefox is quite rare to be seen.
Very often you might see Opera vs. Firefox or Konqueror vs. Firefox, but comparing IE and Firefox is like comparing a Rolls Royce with a bicycle... Both can be useful for sure... but there's no comparison to make...

Go Firefox!

is this even a fair question?
spyware, security holes, pop ups galore, no tabbed browsing, slow, = IE
no spyware, security holes, pop ups, great tabbed browsing, open source, extremely fast, and so on = firefox
No wonder Google & Apple will be fighting over who buys Firefox/Mozilla

Thanks again , I'll work on the situation some more with the added info in mind .

No trouble as of the past few days ... I think I'm going to download Firefox soon and have both available , as I should have enough space left on hard drive and in Ram for both .

Warm Regards ,

Go Firefox!

Well , like I said earlier , I'm relatively new to computers , started playing around on one about 2 yrs. ago , just picking up stuff trial and error and looking a few things up now and then .

However , the way gas prices are going , a bicycle might just out-perform the RR . :)

In case you haven't gotten the message by now... Firefox!

The only time IE is useful is for annoying sites written in ASP that requires special built-in ActiveX features; those tend to break in Firefox and Netscape.

Oh, and also, if you do any web programming, you unfortunately have to keep IE around for the 90% of clueless masses out there that will be viewing your site using it.

And if you ever need to do any server-side web programming, and have a choice...

PHP + MySQL/PostgreSQL > ASP + Access (although admittedly, .NET and SQL Server are pretty darn good, but very expensive).

Edit: That's C# on .NET, ASP.NET still gets pwned, and VB is just dirty.

Until they get it fixed, ya might want to disable javascript...

Mozilla Firefox JavaScript Engine Information Disclosure Vulnerability

Quote from Secunia site:

Description:
A vulnerability has been discovered in Mozilla Firefox, which can be exploited by malicious people to gain knowledge of potentially sensitive information.

The vulnerability is caused due to an error in the JavaScript engine, as a "lambda" replace exposes arbitrary amounts of heap memory after the end of a JavaScript string.

Successful exploitation may disclose sensitive information in memory.

Secunia has constructed a test, which can be used to check if your browser is affected by this issue:
http://secunia.com/mozilla_products_arbitrary_memory_exposure_test/

The vulnerability has been confirmed in versions 1.0.1 and 1.0.2. Other versions may also be affected.

Solution:
Disable JavaScript support

scroll down to the second to last paragraph.

Like my avatar alludes to... and like the button on my Taskbar says, "Opera, Simply the best Internet Experience". Me likes Opera! :)

I just saw it mentioned today at google news and thought of the ones convinced and that use Firefox here at CF.

Also heard today that when the new Photoshop CS2 ships, it will use Opera as it's file browser. Me not the only one who likes Opera.

As for IE, there is only one website that I "have" to use it on... Windows Update. Other than that, it just sits there collecting digital dust... thinking of the day... hehe :)

rdale,

just out of curiousity~ have you used Firefox before you switched to Opera? If so, could you give a comparison between Firefox and Opera, and why you think Opera is better?

thanks!

Hi loribee59,

I've used Opera since version 5, I think, had it registered since version 6. It has always been the quickest to me. There are a gob of features that I don't even use, like for rss feeds, mail, etc. I really keep things pretty minimalistic, see the screencaps. Have a sister that uses Firefox, not IE - security, not Opera - didn't like the ads and didn't want to register. At least got her on Firefox... But for me, I've tried it since it was still beta up till the second to last version, 1.01 or whatever. Opera is still noticeably faster, and not prone to potential security problems related to the addon plugins. Another thing that bugs me about Firefox is, say I want to view a web page locally (on my hard drive), it wants to connect to the internet. Why, when it's local? In Opera, I leave the splash screen there to let me choose whether to go to my home page, or do nothing but open and choose a file, local or web to enter. The other thing that bugs me is that Firefox, when online it is constantly polling the internet for an active connection (?).

With Opera I can choose every aspect of how I want it or not want it to run. Me likes it. :)

hope it helps...:)

I have tried Opera several times, on several OSes, in the past. I stongly disliked it for many reasons. I'm set with Firefox ever since version 0.4 (Firebird back then) and I couldn't find a better browser (hmm lynx maybe lol).

I haven't installed Opera on my OS now, since it is so great that there is not even an official Debian package...

Anyway, when windows people ask me about a good browser, I always tell them : Firefox OR Opera, so they have the choice. Most of the time they'll end up with Firefox by choice though...

Firefox is my weapon of choice. IE is garbage really... and I only use it for a) windows update and b) stupid pages that don't conform to standards. But in my mind, if your website doesnt conform to standards then it's not worth visiting anyway :p
