I know I'm guilty of googling up works on the Puritans from time to time but everywhere I look I see ads for certain business! It's freakin' me out a little. I know big brother is watching but I now notice how often they are tracking me with ads and it makes me dislike the products that stock me.

The problem with removing all cookies is that I would have to re-type all my passwords everything I logged into the numerous, yes, numerous sites I belong to and post at. The Ghostery looks like a good option.

I sent a message complaining about being tracked to the business and they kindly responded. They said it was google that tracks my searching and place the ads. I was again contacted by Still Waters when I made this post on CF. I asked how did they know I made the post and was told by "google alerts."

The biz was kind enough to answer my questions and I am thankful for that...but I'm still unsettled about having my every move tracked.

JM,

I have tried the Ghostery and didn't like it, pain in the neck. If you have the cookies deleted when Firefox closes, in the tools > options > security, select remember passwords for sites. You will have to type them in one more time but they will be there from then on.

Also, if you wish to be completely anonymous when surfing get the fee edition of Cocoon.

CalledOutOne,

The Puritan Hard Drive is legitimate.

Correction: The edition of Cocoon should read "free"

It may be that you're overly paranoid. This particular site has three tracking bots on it, Google adsense, Google analytics, and Quantcast.

Ghostery has blocked all three of them.

i defeat google with an extension called "Track Me Not" which sends random querries to Google every 30 seconds. Any data that may exist on me is skewed beyond any and all recognition.

Cookies are managed with the Cookie Monster extension, and i use an extension called Better Privacy to remove "Flash Cookies" which can take up an unbelievable amount of space on your hard drive, along with NoScript.

Of course, i'm using OpenSUSE 12.1 Linux as my OS, so i'm not really worried about malware. Next piece of malware that works with Linux will be the first.

I've noticed that too.
It's creepy, but does anyone know if the Puritan HD is legit?

Beats me, PHD has always been way out of my price range. Ages Software before they went out of business, used to offer the best "bang for the buck". For example, you could get the A.W. Pink or B.B. Warfield or C.H. Spurgeon or John Calvin libraries between $20-40 each. These days, I prefer Libronix/LOGOS resources (community pricing especially) and theWord (free like e-Sword only better), but I sometimes use the old Ages Software libraries I purchased.

Yes, it is an excellent product. You can download a free version with about 100 MB of docs to get a sense for how the custom database works in searching the thousands of MB that comes with the PHD product.

I surf with Google Chrome and use an extension called "Adblock" and another handy extension is WOT (Web of Trust). If you use IE, in the privacy settings, set it to block or not allow third party cookies, they're not needed 99% of the time with legit sites.

They are constantly tracking us. That's why I typically use fake names... I guess I shouldn't done that with Facebook.

I have been known to be overly paranoid. I don't trust the government, the internet, public schools, or anything else (not going into why because it's off topic and I'm pretty sure it's against the rules at this site).

But yeah, like AW said. Adblocker works wonders. No more advertisements. Good stuff.

As for tracking cookies, I just delete my cookies. I'm pretty sure that most web browsers (Google Chrome does at least) allow you to just delete the cookies and not what you type into text fields, web history, etc.

I hate deleting the history. There are too many sites that I can't find unless I use the history.

Doesn't work for flash cookies.

I use the free CCleaner every so often to clean all the internet junk. I've used CCleaner for many years, it's fast, efficient, and I have never experienced a problem with the simple registry cleaning part of the program either.

I've always thought that Microsoft should have had a similar program built into Windows, or they should have made the author(s) of CCleaner an offer they couldn't refuse, because it helps keep Windows working properly. Too many programs leave behind junk files when they're uninstalled with Windows default uninstaller.

What's the deal with Java? Does it really need to update every single day? Every time I turn on my computer I get a noticed to update and its really bugging me.
i don't have that issue on my main computer (it runs Linux), but my Laptop runs Windows 7...for the moment...

i think there's an issue with the java updater. i had to update twice on my system before it actually installed. i also had the same thing happen with a computer i was fixing for somebody. That computer was running Windows XP.
