  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I found the following quite interesting. It's usually what happens when you think outside the box and do research on a position.

The Question is Coming | Presbyterian Record

Thinking outside the box in this case seems like an openness to same sex marriages. I'm not against divorces of those in such unions. I'm against put asunder, contrary to the teaching of Christ, what God has joined.

Usually it's the really conservative Reformed folks who look to John Calvin as an example. Sometimes folks focus too much on the wrong JC.

I found it curious, though, the comment that it was believed a man need only exchange vows with a woman and have sex with her to be considered married. I wonder if that was indeed the case. If it was, it could have been how they handled getting rid of some of the aspects of Roman Catholicism in their society. You'd think a theologian like John Calvin would have focuses on a clearer definition of marriage that did away with the assumption that a pregnant woman who'd been seduced was really married as an initial approach to the problem.
