• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi,

I saw this article and thought I would share. It is about how OCD could be caused by a defective version of the Hoxb8 gene related to the immune system. Unfortunately there is no immediate cure listed in the article, but I thought it was something interesting, and perhaps something to watch... maybe there will be a treatment one day based on this info.

God bless.

My OCD started right after I got over strep throat I was 8.

Oh wow. Have you ever heard of PANDAS? It's an acronym, but I can't remember what the letters stand for. But it's a theory that strep throat and OCD are related.

I didn't read that artilce the flowerforever linked, so you might've just read about it I suppose.

hold on, what is this about? This is news to me. I thought OCD was caused by traumatic events on a person or physical damage to the head.

Well traumatic events can also cause it, as well as genetics. But from what I understand, there is a considerable amount of evidence suggesting that OCD can also be caused by strep throat. According to what I've read, some children that get strep throat get a sudden onset of severe OCD upon catching strep. THe book I read said that once the strep goes away, so does the OCD.

If you've never had strep, that doesn't mean that you don't have OCD. THere are quite a few other causes of OCD.

That's interesting. Mine was caused as far as I know from traumatic event, but when I was younger I used to get strep throat all the time. I go to the University of Utah and I am taking a Biology class from someone who does research with Mario Cappechi. I can ask her after class tomorrow to explain it in greater detail if anyone is interested.

I actually heard the same thing about strep bringing on OCD. I had it ALOT when I was young, to the point where I almost had to get my tonsels taken out. I didn't get OCD though until 4 years ago after I went through brain surgery to remove a tumor and was on this medication called Keppra for seizures.

Well I don't think that strep will always cause OCD. I mean, it sounds like it wasn't your strep that caused your OCD, fealty. It sounds more like your surgery, and/or medication caused it. (Though, I am no doctor, so I can't say for sure.) I had the same situation.

Oh yeah OCD=Owie, I know mine was caused either by the meds or surgery, or both. I never had it until then. I was actually reading something the other day that stated that strep can cause OCD, I just wonder if it's a new finding or just a coincidence. I don't know if it's true or not, but I know it's not in my case.

I haven't heard of Pandas but someone told me that strep causes OCD. I remember being normal until I was eight after strep but I had a traumatic childhood and my mom and sister are obsessional in alot of ways. Cleaning, worrying etc. but not like full blown OCD and no one else in my family has OCD . So I do admit I feel like why me sometimes. I think it is genetic and a traumatic event makes it emerge.
