The concept of "ion channels" influencing cells are a god of the gaps theory.

If this research is true.

A better explanation would be electricity / EM fields carrying the potential to activate DNA and genes which lie dormant. In the developmental embryo stage.

Genes normally switch on/off during a person's lifespan. It is possible the trigger for it is electricity/EM based.
