  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

After going to a lecture by a Catholic scholar, I was disturbed that she mainly reiterated John Paul II's statements without any additional ideas of her own. I am wondering if Catholic intellectuals are hesistant of moving into new areas because they fear that the Church will come to a different conclusion. I'm curious how others here see this issue.

To Dreams:

*Intellectual* creativity is no problem.

*Religious* creativity is. Catholics are to look to the Church for guidance in understanding their faith. We most certainly are encouraged to read, to do research, to pray. But if we find ourselves with beliefs that are contrary to Church teaching, we should diligently seek Church answers to our questions.

The Church is the pillar and foundation of our faith. Once we start chipping away at those pillars, our faith is in jeopardy.

Peace be with you,

Simply coming to grips with the thinking of JPII is going to keep the intellectuals of the Church busy for the next two or three centuries. Once they've done that, maybe they can spare some brain power for original thoughts :)
