  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Lately I've been noticing that no one seems to hold onto any morals or ideas anymore. If we all just stuck to one idea no matter the cost would we benefit or suffer? For example infedelity has somehow become a common practice throughout the US. Why is this? Does no one hold anything sacred anymore? I never see any examples anymore of people like Job as described in the bible in the modern United States. Job was tested and tried by Satan and overcame. His entire life was completely destroyed and yet he still loved the Lord. Eventually he became weak and began to curse himself and yet throughout his cursings he never blamed God for his destruction. This truly is a great example of what I'm talking about. A man who lost everything and yet held onto the law that he would never curse the name of the Lord. Truly amazing. So do you fellow christians believe that this still exists or is this "an old practice"?

Of course there is a percentage that do have sacred values, and there has always been a percentage that doesn't. For instance, a fairly sizable percentage of people don't cheat on their spouses. It is, fortunately, an exaggeration to suggest that no one does.

Even nontheists may hold some values sacred. I have plenty of sacred values.

Integrity still exists and it's not exclusive to christians. We tend to focus on the negatives rather than the positive. If a story emerges about a pastor who has slept with members of his congregation we automatically assume their all at it. Church leaders today, especially tele-evangelists, are constantly being scrutinized for every word they say or action they do. It's easy to become disheartened when we hear about so called men of God falling into sin.

That shouldn't prevent you from having high standards for your own life. You can be an individual who believes in the sanctity of marriage, you can be the person who will hold onto your faith no matter what trials come your way.
The majority of us christians are striving to live our lives with integrity and honour. I know many christians who have those same qualities that Job had :)

In some cases, morals or values have to adapt or else we would suffer (I believe I read that in a book yesterday). Besides, some morals are relative (meaning variances throughout culture, religions, etc.), and some are absolute (do not murder, do not steal, and the like). So perhaps it will seem that no one does, especially since we are increasingly pluralistic ( I think that's the term I'm looking for).
For example infedelity has somehow become a common practice throughout the US. Why is this? Does no one hold anything sacred anymore?
I agree with Eudiamonist. There always has been and always will be people who do hold things sacred and those who don't. It's the price we pay for having individual brains, cultures, etc.
Also agreed that holding things sacred isn't exclusive to theists. :)

#1 We live in a society where you are free to curse God without risk of burning at the stake.
#2 We have drugs to "treat" the weaknesses...well drugs and a wealth of material items proposed to "make it all better".

I think in America (at least, since I can't properly judge any other countries since I don't live there) we've become very gluttonous and excessive. TV game shows where people do horrendous things just for money. People who drive SUVs for status - not for function. You know the single man or woman who doesn't haul anything more than a backseat full of groceries type. The civilian sale of Hummers...well don't get me started on that one! It's all about "stuff stuff stuff". One particular car ad on tv makes me balk every time I hear it, for some SUV no doubt that says "It's not more than you need, it's more than you're used to" . Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. Sorry, but if my car's gonna have a tv in it, it better have a toilet too because I'll be living in it.
