Species are not neatly demarcated entities. Neandertals, Denisovans, and anatomically modern Homo sapiens were all genetically distinct groups that could and did interbreed. Whether you call them separate species or not is a matter of convention and taste. Offspring from similarly related groups in other species is hardly unknown.
