  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

In the beginning...

He created heaven and earth so that he could create mankind.

Question: "Why did God create us?"

Answer: The short answer to the question “why did God create us?” is “for His pleasure.” Revelation 4:11 says, “Thou hast created all things, and for Thy pleasure they are and were created.” Colossians 1:16 reiterates the point: “All things were created by Him and for Him.”

Being made in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:27), human beings have the ability to know God—and therefore love Him, worship Him, serve Him, and fellowship with Him. God did not create human beings because He needed them. As God, He needs nothing. In all eternity past, He felt no loneliness, so He was not looking for a “friend.” He loves us, but this is not the same as needing us. If we had never existed, God would still be God—the Unchanging One (Malachi 3:6).

The I AM THAT I AM (Exodus 3:14) was never dissatisfied with His own eternal existence. When He made the universe, He did what pleased Him, and since God is perfect, His action was perfect. “It was very good” (Genesis 1:31).

Also, God did not create “peers” or beings equal to Himself. Logically, He could not do so. If God were to create another being of equal power, intelligence, and perfection, then He would cease to be the One True God for the simple reason that there would be two gods—and that would be an impossibility. “The Lord He is God; there is none else beside Him” (Deuteronomy 4:35). Anything that God creates must of necessity be lesser than He. The thing made can never be greater than the One who made it.

Recognizing the complete sovereignty and holiness of God, we are amazed that He would take man and “crown him with glory and honor” (Psalm 8:5), and that He would condescend to call us “friends” (John 15:14-15).

Thanks but I've already googled the question and I've read this before. Not really a good reason, doesn't make much sense either.

God created the heavens and the earth for His glory. God created man for His glory. Man was created in the image of God so that we would reflect His glory. God created all things so that His glory would be known. God wants the whole earth to be filled with His glory. Jesus said in John 17:4,5 "I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was."

Alright, then why does he want glory? I would think being god is enough no? Doesn't already have glory? And, no offense, but this sounds like the worlds is here for the sole purpose of catering to god's ego.

soujerners reply reeks of egoism and Gods low self esteem.
after wasting countless years thinking about this question, the only conclution I can come up with is God was bored. LOL but then again it raises as many questions as Soujourners reply. dam my tendancy to anthropomorh things.
however i have always been in love with the new age-Neal Donald Walsh idea that God made everything so that God may re-exsperience/recreate/redefine who-God-is thru Creation and the human exsperience. sort of like the analogy that I can call myself a football player, but unless I go out an exspereince the exsperience of being a football player, then I will never really know nor exsperience whats its really like to be a football player until I accually go out and exsperience whats its like fisrt hand.

who knows? I have no clue.

Why?

Not really a good reason, doesn't make much sense either.

What is your point in asking this question on a Christian forum? I'm curious. Do you want to know why Christians believe that God created heaven and earth? I gave you that reason that most of us believe in. It's not good enough for you and doesn't "make sense" to you, so why not just direct your question toward persons who might give you the answer you seek instead? Perhaps you could give them an outline to work from? Or maybe you aren't after a Christian response at all?

Ask those from whom you seek the answer. Hindus? Muslims? Atheists?

Or.... if you really do, seek dialogue between Christians and yourself, perhaps you could tell me what it is about the explanation I offered that doesn't make sense to you. More information = more discussion. Right?

Btw, there is no animosity in my previous post, nor this one either. I'm just very direct in my approach sometimes. So please don't take offense. None is intended.

What's the point in being god if nobody knows you're god?

Not being able to fully fathom the mind of God, the best we can offer are the reasons stated in scripture and our own guess'.
Perhaps we make it too difficult, though.
Why do some people like to paint pictures? Or build houses with legos?
God is a creative being.
As hard as it is for us to understand, the Bible gives a picture of a God who is an emotional being. He becomes sad, angry, feels joy and sorrow, etc. Perhaps his reason for creating us was companionship-from beings, who, like Him, had the same range of feelings and the liberty of free will.

Well if I were God, I'd probably create a universe. Eternity would get pretty dull otherwise. Having a universe would at least give you a little project to work on, give you something to do.

Why not create a universe?

You would not create a universe because inaction is the default.
I don't understand why we apply our petty human emotions, like boredom, to God.

I'm just saying what I might do in his position. The Bible does claim that the Christian God has several humanlike emotions, such as jealousy, anger, love; so it's not unreasonable to suppose that he might create a universe for the same reasons as a human would, from the Christian point of view.

Of course, all of this is just hypothetical to me.
