not a great believer in god but if there is one, why is there so much suffering in this world??
DAVE,
Suffering is related to sin, a consequence of human fallenness. The ultimate question of suffering is "Why don't we all suffer more than we do? Why hasn't God not gotten tired of man's rebellion toward Him and just destroy us all. Why does He tolerate us as we continue to sin and destroy His planet?

THE ANSWER IS LOVE....Remember, there is no one that suffered more than God's own son, JESUS HIMSELF. Everything else pails in comparison.
God in His infinite wisdom, has a purpose for everything. The purpose may sound like silliness to unbelievers, but to those who are truly His children, the Holy Spirit has revealed to us that God uses suffering to bring those "who are His", closer to Him. Thus, those who truly belong to God are drawn closer to Him in times of suffering, we don't withdraw. Our character is tested in times of trials and it is through these trials, God finds out who is His faithful children are.

Trials and Temptations
JAMES 1:2-4,12
Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything....Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.

NOTE: Because of man's self-centeredness, they don't understand this concept and ridicule it, refusing to let God be God.

That is a good question, one that people have been grappling with for... well a very long time. I think the easier part of suffering to explain would be suffering that caused by other people. We humans do a great many things to hurt one another. This is not to say that we don't do good, but every one of us has done something bad to someone else, whether its out of spite or revenge or jealousy or any of the myriad of reason we use to justify inflicting pain on each other. God gave us free will, He wanted us to love Him because we wanted to, not because we had to. The other side of this blade is that we have the ability to do whatever we want to whomever we want... good or bad.

Now as far as natural diseasters like Katrina or the 2004 Tsunumi, I really can't tell you. Scientists can come up with logic reasons for them all. And for some that is enough. But if you're looking for someone to blame for those things... that's abit more complicated.

Rom: 19-21 The creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.

Death, disease and decay, everything in the natural world is affected by Adam's sin not just man.

I think it's important to point out that - sin is the cause of suffering - and suffering (and death) is what freed us from sin.

Christ suffered and died so that sins (and ultimately, suffering, if we follow logic) would be washed away through His Blood.

Christ also asks us to rejoice in our suffering... we can even unite our suffering to His.

With love,
Simon

It's for Non-Christians to ask Christians questions...

From the Questions by Non Christians Statement of Purpose thread -
