It says in the bible we should not make vows or promises to the lord and if we do we have to fulfill them and see them through. I made a promise in my head to the lord and now I'm wondering If I have to fulfill it? Please pray that God will give me clarity on whether I have to or not

1. Always ask God about that - but in general never promise God to do anything apart from His Will and His help.

I say things like "God I am convicted that I would like to do such-and-such to honor your name. Please be my guide and counselor to let me know if this is the right path and if so to help me actually do what I am convicted to do".

Make God your friend in such situations. Don't leave Him on the outside as merely your "line judge".

2. If you still feel strongly about doing it because you made some sort of bargain or "trade" with God in a prayer - at least come before Him with determination to follow HIS Will and not your own. Pray the request above and let him know that you want Him as your Father in Heaven, your Savior and Guide who knows what is best and knows what you should and should not say.

3. Jeptha is a great example in the Bible of someone making a vow to God that they never should have made and that God was not pleased with. see - Judges 11 and Judges 12

In most cases some make promises to the Lord in order to gain something from the Lord. "Do not tempt the Lord your God". This came to mind. I suggest repenting from the whole thing, regardless of your particular reason, and never make a promise you can't keep ever again.
Blessings.

God is so more and better than we are; so He is able to have us doing more and better than what we can now promise.

Plus, we do not know what will happen in the future.

So . . . though . . . there are times I feel I should make a commitment; but I say things like, "If the LORD wills", and I might say I won't make an actual promise but I "intend" to do something, plus I hope to do something better than what now I could think of promising.

And . . . usually . . . when I then do set out to do something . . . indeed I find that God has me doing it better than I was thinking and hoping . . . even, for example, when I first intended to write this post, I can find myself doing it better than I might have been thinking, at first :)

God can bless us to write or do what is more caring and better done, than what we might have been planning, at first.

And one of the best things surprising us can be the people and the loving which we could not have arranged or planned.

God does not want you to just make promised gestures to Him; He has loving and caring and sharing for you with others, as family in Jesus and doing what can help people to become adopted to become children of God. So, in case you make a promise, this could be a way of isolating yourself with your own mind and abilities . . . versus getting into doing things in sharing with God and one another as His family. So, I would not make promises that can limit you to yourself and isolate you with controlling your own self so you are alone. Instead, we need to get more with one another Jesus people as family and then discover what we do in unity with one another.

I made a promise in my head to the lord and now I'm wondering If I have to fulfill it?

As has already been made clear, God does not make bargins with us, he expects obedience from us.

So follow 1John1:9 and confess to god your mistake and sek not to do it again.

Thats the point of making promises - to fulfill it.

However, there may be some exceptions - the change of conditions or laws that framed the promise, the promise was about an act that is sinful, evil, harmful or was done with the lack of important information.

Jesus shed some light on this, he said:

Mat 5:36-37 Don't swear by your own head. You cannot make one hair white or black. When you make a promise, say only "Yes" or "No." Anything else comes from the devil.

The devil likes to try to trap us into making oaths that a) either we can not keep, or b) bring us distress or difficulty in keeping.

I made foolish oaths at one point in my life because I wanted to do what was right, but I found I was unable to keep it. Which made me feel fearful and afraid of what "God might do". But the reality is God knows it is Satan who puts us under the pressure to make oaths. He is unlikely to get angry. Nowadays I just accept God's forgiveness and move on. I would suggest the same for you, it is Satan that wants to make you afraid of God, accept God's forgiveness and move on.

Mat 26:40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?
Mat 26:41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

God understands that our intentions may not be achievable. This is why we shouldn't make vows.

Mat 5:37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
