You have to remember that suicidal people are suicidal because they are HOPELESS!!! It's like painting a nice picture for a blind person. The thought was sweet but in the end it doesn't do any good but further frustrate him because your asking him to have hope in a life that he's already been forced to give up.

Yes, but this mentality is what is causing the depression. By making these statements, you're encouraging him against hope.
The key to escaping depression is in thinking the right thoughts deliberately.
