I was stationed in Syracuse in the Air Force. The sergeant started to tell me about lake efect snow, and I started laughing.

He said, "What's so funny?", and I said, "Sarge, I'm from Michigan. I forgot more about lake effect snow than you could ever tell me."

Especially since he was from D.C.

It was 19 degrees out this morning in SW-Ohio. It's only suppose to get to the mid-30's. It's about TIME! I love winter. Love snow, blizzards, ice. I lived, for a time, in a place that had no weather. BORING! Gimme tornados, gale-force winds, green air, thunder and lightening. Nature's majesty.

Ooh... looks like I'm in for it when all of that hits Ontario. We had a lovely snow earlier this morning, but we get the full lake effect in the dead of winter - I live right in between Lake Huron and Lake Erie.

Pfff. We just got a foot of snow overnight. And that's no problem, except for that I just broke the one and only shovel I have.

Where I live, people start cracking out the t-shirts once it hits 5 degrees (that would be approx. 40 degrees Fahrenheit). I remember our school going on a trip to France over the Christmas holidays a few years back and everyone ripping off their clothes and jumping into the Mediterranean, while all the Europeans were bundled in jackets. I think we were seen as 'les idiots'!

I'm actually enjoying the snow. Its so pretty and a nice change of pace.

I haven´t seen any time the snow, only snow-water sometimes in Valencia, but snow never.

Even weirder is hoarfrost.

That's when the air temperature is so cold (usually 10 degrees below zero or colder) that the moisture in the air freezes into minute ice crystals and just trickles out of the air onto the ground. This is different from snow, which is basically frozen precipitation. Hoarfrost is frozen humidity, more or less. It only occurs at really cold temperatures, and it's incredibly beautiful, especially when the sun is shining. It's sort of like being in a gigantic glass globe full of water watching glitter flowing down all around you.

Great stuff.

Never saw that, either. But it isn't uncommon around here (for men, anyway), when it gets really cold, to have the moisture in your breath freeze after it's exhaled, forming ice on the beard and moustache.

I grew up in sunny California. The only snow that I ever saw was the snow on the mountain tops or in the movies. Then I moved to Minnesota... a whole different climate here... man oh man does it get cold here. Michigan and Wisconsin and Minnesota have similar weather fronts. Usually our neck of the woods is freezing cold from November until March or April...

This week, we had our first snow fall... and it was not fun, it was cold. I miss my sunny, perfect weather... sometimes... but for the most part, I love having 4 seasons and actually knowing the differences of those 4 seasons. It's awesome. The snow isn't too bad once we get to use it and for those who are into snow activities, it's awesome.

LOL. When I was in college, I had a science professor who said he was going to pick one student at random, have them look out the window, and tell the rest of the class what the weather was. He picked me.

I went over and looked out the window, and I said, "Well, it's a fairly sunny day, low humidity and winds calm probably at 3 to 5 miles per hour. Barometric pressure is likely to be steady, and for atmospheric conditions, we have a low level of fair-weather cumulus clouds at about 1500 to 4000 feet, with a layer of altocumulus off to the west at 10,000, offset by some high-level cirrus clouds at about 25,000. Above that altitude, ceiling and visibility should be unlimited with little probability of turbulence in the upper atmosphere."

I turned around and the room was dead silent, with every kid in there just sort of staring at me. The prof stood there with his mouth hanging open, and I just smiled, shrugged, and said, "I was in the Air Force."
