  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Satellite Broadband Anyone?

I have it because there is no cable, dsl, or any other alternative where I live... It is not much faster than dial up for browsing web sites, but IS MUCH FASTER FOR LARGE FILE DOWNLOADS - almost as fast as cable.

The reason it is not so fast with web pages is that evey click has to go the satellite, back to earth, then back to the satellite, then back to you. Like This:

Request page > Satellite > Sat Provider's DataCenter > Internet..... Sat Provider's Data Center > Satellite > page to your desktop.

If it is a large file or big page, you get it about the same speed as a small file or simple page. That sucks when you are clicking around, but it really is nice on broadband sites that you had no hope of getting on dial-up.

20 MB file? No problem. Only a couple minutes instead of 20 minutes to one hour with dial up.

BUT Watchout for FTP - upload speed with Satellite is S L O W

I have Ameritech SBC's Digital Subscriber Line (DSL). it is a dial up service but I've got a 1.5 mbit pipe (for free! tee hee! [i have a ded server with a online mall on there, the guy is paying me $50 a month for it, and it goes to the DSL line, which i take um.... 75% bandwith easily. ;) ] )

Satellite is only good for ppl out of range of ADSL, DSL, Cable, Tx's, etc.

It does help to have

The differences between Cable and DSL:
Bottom Line: hardly any.
Real line: Cable: Uncapped can be extrodinary to those who enjoy downloading music all the time, even uncapped is handy to people who already have Cable tv, and when plugged in is on all the time (minus cable snaps from storms, etc).

DSL: you can have a wide range on this puppy. It connects to your phone line and works at a high er frequency than the spectrum you speak through without tieing up your phone line. Depending on the speed and location of where you're at, is what kind of price you're looking at as well. $50 a month can easily get you a good 600k down, 300k up.

If you want to know where your connection stands. Turn off any internet using programs except for your browser and goto dslreports.com and click on the tools link. A speed test tool is there that will connect you with a backbone (Uunet or DalNet , can't remember) and show how you rate. Put in your zip code number and see how you rank with people in your area as well.
