Not off the top of my head, but I know it is there in Scripture. I believe the argument goes sort of like this: Mary was espoused to Joseph (engaged) when he found out she was pregnant. So, he took her in but never married her or had sex with her. And, usually, the claim usually goes on to state that Mary was actually the "wife" of the Holy Spirit, and for her to marry Joseph would make her an adulterer.

That's the way I heard it, for what it is worth.....

So what about the stuff I have bolded below:

Mat 1:19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly.

Mat 1:20 But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

Mat 1:21 "She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins."

Mat 1:22 Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:

Mat 1:23 "BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL," which translated means, "GOD WITH US."

Mat 1:24 And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took {Mary} as his wife,

Mat 1:25 but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus.

I am just incredulous.

There are actually people who deny that Joseph and Mary were married.
Does anyone have evidence, writings or scripture pro or con?

Who was saying this? Was it a particular denomination or something?

Hey, in my attempt to learn more about the RCC, which began with the true hope I would somehow be able to understand at least some of the "traditions" that seem to rule their religious faith. Instead, just the things I found out about their various beliefs in Mary got me so confused that I had to give up in frustration.

For instance, did you know that Mary is the mother of the Creator? Or that there is an extremely serious attempt by millions of Catholics to sway the pope into declaring her co-redemtrix? And about the pope. Did you know he formally and publically thanked Mary for his recovery after he was shot? Not God, but Mary? Or that he placed the spiritual welfare of tens of thousands of teens and young people into mary's hands at a youth meeting in Denver? And on and on and on....

Matthan <J>< [To the mods: This is not any kind of condemnation or accusation of the RCC or the pope, just factual information for the reader's edification.

I am hesitant to state it is a particular denomination....I don't think it really is. I think it is just some folks.

Oh alright. Well please don't tell me if it would violate their privacy. Or if you want, you could always PM me but it's not that important so please don't feel like you have to.

Well, I believe scripture teaches they were married - as in the site of the Jewish leaders, having followed the marriage custom of the day.

I wondered if anyone has background on that and if they had ever heard they were not married.

I would also assume that they were married. At least that's always what I had thought.

Free I believe your quotes pretty much answer the question. Some people will go to any lengths to try to elevate Mary to a higher position than is called for...

If you would have been more vigilant those DUMB people wouldn't have FOUND you! :D OK, please forgive me for my silliness. I don't feel so good and look even worse!! :D

Luke 2

41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. 42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. 43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. 44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. 45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. 46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. 47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. 48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. 49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? 50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. 51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, F11 and in favour with God and man.

Look at 48, Mary says to Jesus that her and His father have been looking for Him

then in 49, Jesus says that He has to be about His Fathers business
