  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I'm disappointed

After reading the most recent news regarding the terrible shootings in Colorado, I popped over here fully expecting to find some jerkface atheist gloating about how "haha, he was a christian mad at other christians. That's what religion will do to you!" and was ready to put them in their place for exploiting other people's personal tragedy to try and make some silly worthless and inaccurate point. I really expected this after SoF's thread that was closed.

Instead, I found christians latching on to one cop's opinion that the guy "hated christians" and doing exactly what I expected a real jerk of an atheist to do, gloating "haha, he's one of yours, he hated christians! That's what atheism will do to you!".

Please people, have some common courtesy and at least a little bit of dignity. Don't go mining someone else's nightmare for 'talking points', especially when no one really knows much of anything yet. That goes for christians, atheists and whatever. It's just disgusting and does your argument no favors.

I don't really know much about the issue to make a conclusion.

The only thing that raises sort of a red flag is that the kid was apparently kicked out of the program for health reasons....

Between this, him being in the program but kicked out, and waiting 5 years before going back to shoot people... the pieces are slowly starting to fall into place.

But I don't feel like saying it, because I could be biased based on my own experiences.

"Very, very religious" family, home schooled, a brother who attended Colorado Christian University and currently at Oral Roberts University. Matthew was let go from Youth With A Mission training which apparently is what set off this entire chain of events.

I don't think his faith, or lack of it, is the issue. He has been harboring alot of resentment from his failed attempt at YWAM and he snapped. They say it was his health that got him kicked out but I know someone who had problems with YWAM leaders and ended up leaving the program.

Yahoo! News says he was raised in a very proper Christian family and was actually a PART of the organization he attacked. He was kicked out for "medical reasons".

He was apparently hearing voices and talking to them.

hmm that doesn't support you at all, theres nothing there about being raised in a family that hated christians.
it sounds to me like he was kicked out of the class for mental reasons and finally snapped after 5 years of resentment

I agree with the general premise of this: it is foolish to boast about a personal tragedy and attempt to attach responsibility to some ideological group.

Atheists are just as diverse as Christians and attaching to them a sweeping generalization is difficult and often foolish.

Exactly what i'm trying to get across :) We don't know and even if we did, it's terrible to gloat about another's tragedy.

I honestly expected to see one of the really nasty attacking atheists here using this to bait christians, based on the info of the guy being raised in a christian family, home-schooled, a member of the organization itself previously etc... There is a lot in there that someone wanting to just attack and hurt others could have used. It truly boggled me to see some on the christian side, who I thought were going to be on the defensive for these reasons, instead using one cops personal opinion to do the very same thing.

I think it would be good for people to discuss this whole thing maturely and with compassion for each other rather than looking to 'score points'. There's far too much of that already in these forums and it would be nice for once to talk about something tragic with thoughtfulness.

Renton, i'm not going to go after you for what you said, even though it falls right into what i'm talking about. All i'm going to do is ask you to please, please actually go read up on the known facts so far before saying anything else. After that if you truly wish to try and profit from the sad deaths of your fellow human beings and religionists then that is your choice, but at least you'll be doing it from a position of knowledge.

There are certain posters here that pretty much guarantee liberal doses of the Christianity/Crusade connection or the Atheism/Communism connection when it is not even the topic of the thread. It is a childish game of tit for tat "my group is all that is good your group is all that is bad".

We know who they are, we could all name at least a dozen usernames that constantly resort to it and derail threads with it. I swear you could be talking about ice cream and those same people will bring it up. At this point we expect that from them just as the OP suggests. I find it discouraging.

There should be a name for it. Is there a name for it?

FYI, if you want to see some of what this guy was purportedly posting (they haven't verified that it's him for certain yet) you can go to http://p223.ezboard.com/bexpentecostalforums and look for posts by nghtmrchld26. The most recent that have to do with this tragedy are gone, but there still appear to be many of his postings available for reading.

It's scary to read them and then to realize how similar he sounds to some people on the forums here, both atheist and christian.

Thanks for the link. Its rather quite fascinating being to read this persons last words to gain better insight into their mind.

The irony of a Christian organization kicking a man out for talking to nonexistent persons is absolutely delicious.

According to one of his posts it was because he was too introverted.

Other than that though, i'm really asking anyone who posts in this thread to please not use it as an opportunity to attack or even provoke either atheists or christians. While I may agree with what you said in other circumstances, i'd really like to keep that sort of thing out of this thread and talk about this rationally amongst ourselves. You may not have intended to sound like you are 'point scoring', but this really does come across that way.

I'm sure you'll understand, thanks :)

Everyone knows strawberry ice cream warps your mind and forces you to do terrible, despicable things. Statistically, most people who eat Strawberry ice cream are Christian. Also, statistically speaking, I and my Atheist/Agnostic brethren prefer the wholesome, righteous vanilla.

Let this be a lesson to all of you with faith in Christ.

From Family Research Council President Tony Perkins:

It is hard not to draw a line between the hostility that is being fomented in our culture from some in the secular media toward Christians and evangelicals in particular and the acts of violence that took place in Colorado yesterday. But I will say no more for now other than that our friends at New Life Church and YWAM are in our thoughts and prayers.
Yeap, it's that darn secular media who rejected this young man.
