• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm a new Christian, and I have one question I need andswered please!

There are three occasions in the book of Acts where speaking in tongues accompanied the receiving of the Holy Spirit—Acts 2:4, 10:44-46, and 19:6. However, these three occasions are the only places in the Bible where speaking in tongues is an evidence of receiving the Holy Spirit. Throughout the book of Acts, thousands of people believe in Jesus and nothing is said about them speaking in tongues (Acts 2:41, 8:5-25, 16:31-34, 21:20). Nowhere in the New Testament is it taught that speaking in tongues is the only evidence a person has received the Holy Spirit. In fact, the New Testament teaches the opposite. We are told that every believer in Christ has the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 12:13; Ephesians 1:13-14), but not every believer speaks in tongues (1 Corinthians 12:29-31).

There is a big difference between speaking in tounges (which requires requires an interpretor) and praying in tounges. (sometimes refered to as intercessory prayer).
I was very skeptical of it all until one night back in march, at a prayer service, I was actually baptized(filled) with the Holy Spirit, totally out of the blue. And I began to pray in tounges balling my eyes out. It was an incredible experiance to say the least.
As for a requirment for the evidence of salvation ...no. The penticostal church believes that but then again that why they call themselve Penticostal. (just more seperation of the church).

NewChristian1694, I guess you can tell you’ve posted about a subject that can generate a lot of responses. If you as a believer are open to receiving then you can have this gift. Though this is like salvation in that Yahweh isn't going to make any person become a believer nor make any believer speak in tongues. It is a diverse gift; therefore, there are different purposes.

The reason it's available to all - Looking at the groups of believers that received in Scripture, they all received:
1- ---On the day of Pentecost in the upper room: Acts 2:4 "And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance"
2- ---Cornelius’ house filled with friends and family who were baptized. Acts 10:44 ”While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God."
3- ---Disciples of Ephesus Acts 19:2 "He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.” 6”And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. 7 And all the men were about twelve.”

Tongues are a sign of believers to unbelievers Mark 16:17 “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;” I Cor 14:22 “Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.”

Since all believers have received The Holy Spirit and not all speak in tongues then speaking in tongues is an evidence of The Holy Spirit but not the evidence of The Holy Spirit.

There are different purposes for speaking in tongues and the purposes also show that they can be for every believer. I Cor. 12:28 states “And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues,”
(1) one purpose of speaking in tongues is for church edification such as I Cor 12:10 "To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues." I Cor 12:30 "Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? Note that the beginning of this verse is about healing and the end is about interpretation and in the middle you have tongues. These verses are about the gifts to the church including of speaking in tongues with interpretation which every believer isn't going to be given that kind of tongue; however,
(2) this is the type of tongues any believer can have because the purposes are for a personal language between you and our Heavenly Father as shown in such Scriptures as Jude 1:20 "But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, 21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.” Acts 10:46 "For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. …” Ephesians 6:18 "And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests." There's also singing in the Spirit Eph 5:19 "Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;” .” I Cor 14: 15 “What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.”

All tongues can be interpreted. I Cor 14:13 “Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.” This also means you may not receive the interpretation.

HI - Well it sounds like you have learned much faster than I did - I was raised very strick and it took me many, many years to learn that it is the relationship between you and God that is important, not the label on the church.

Since I finally learned that - I could go to any church and it would not make any difference to me. I have my hand in the hand of Jesus and led by the Holy Spirit wanting only to please God and not man. Once you have that relationship - you can visit any church and it won't make a difference, no one can shake you once that relationship is founded in Jesus and led by the Holy Spirit.

Don't be afraid of the speaking in tongues - it is a Gift from God and everyone does not receive that Gift - they could, but if you are not ready for it, God will not bestow it on you. Just look to God, not church or man. You will be fine.

I think the most noticeable thing when asking in Jesus is a change in heart. You will still fight with the world of sin and inconsistancies in your mind but the overall change in your heart will be very noticeable. Just to let you know I feel the same way with pentecostal churces, it is just too much for me. I completely respect and somewhat admire the faith but it was just a bit too much for me. When I went to a service though I do remeber feeling something sweep up in me briefly..and believe it was the holy spirit. I like non-denominational churches. I had a great one back home and liked it so much that I have not found a church thus far that I can compare to it. I work most of the time on sunday anyhow so I usually end up listeing to podcasts from my church back home.

So I have been working on my Faith a lot, but there is one thing I am wondering. In the Bible, it says that one the Holy Spirit touches you, you start speaking tongues. That is when you know you have definitely been saved. Now, is that really necessary? Can you be saved without the ''speaking tongues'' part? And is it okay to be quiet when you pray, in church. I have seen a lot of people who were shouting their Faith (I guess I could say that) and I have nothing against it, I think it's beautiful. But I'm not one to shout, I'm a quiet person haha. So help? Please? :prayer:
If your in a church that says you need to speak in tongues to be saved your in a church that teaches false doctrine GET OUT! the gift of tongues is true, but do all speak in tongues? the answer is NO!

Jesus was clear about salvation, and did not say that tongues was related to the condition of being saved. In fact, tongues were not written about in the NT until after His resurrection... so what would have happened to any believers who died before Acts 2! Of course they were saved.

Jesus said that He would send the Holy Spirit to people because He would not be able to spend time with them on earth. That was a very distinct purpose and timing -- and Jesus did not connect the manifestation of Holy Spirit gifts with salvation.

About UPC... it sounds like you are not comfortable with it right now. When you place yourself in an environment, it begins to grow on you, and it's harder to get out the longer you're there. If you already know it's not a good fit, then look around more before settling down. It's a blessing to have Christian friends, so don't toss the contacts you have... but don't subject yourself to rules you disagree with.

Not every Pentecostal church teaches that, or requires strict dress codes. Notice how the more insistent a group is in teaching rules, the more legalistic they are about salvation. Salvation is a free gift, and redemption was offered to all. That is the gospel.

It is only God who gives Faith. If one lacks faith he/she should ask God. When he/she asks they should believe and not doubt otherwise they will not recieve.

1 Corinthians 12: 7-11
"Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between Spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of the one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines."

You are indeed saved friend. I do not speak in tongues, yet through the same Spirit who allows people to do so, I give messages of Wisdom. satan wants you to doubt your salvation. Do not doubt, the Kingdom of God is within you.
The Spirit of God is within you if you confess from your heart Jesus is Lord. Do not be decieved. Showing love to anyone is a manifestation of God's Spirit. It is indeed God's Spirit at work, God is love. Friend, you do show love.
