Per the bill:

…an individual who is not a citizen but is legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law is authorized to apply for the position of police officer, subject to all requirements and limitations, other than citizenship, to which other applicants are subject.

I don't see anything terribly controversial about this.

Referring to it as "illegal aliens" is misleading (making it sound like someone's sneaking across the border on Monday, and getting a badge on Friday)...that's not what this is.

This is non-citizens who are authorized to work in the US being allowed to apply for a particular job in addition to the thousands of other jobs we allow non-citizens with work permits/work visas to apply for.

They'll still have to pass all of the same background checks and training requirements as every other police officer would.

So I'll take that as you acknowledging that your comment about "illegal immigrants" was misleading and you're withdrawing it?

Secondly, why is that "common sense"? You'll need to quantify that.

Is a person who's here legally on a work visa, is physically fit, trained, and passed a background check (and who knows, maybe even worked in law enforcement in their country before applying for a visa and coming here?) not qualified apprehend & detain a person who's robbing a Chicago Walgreens?

The people in question are neither illegal nor undocumented. These are people who applied for a work visa and came here legally.

Non-citizens doesn’t mean illegal. My family on my mothers side were non-citizens who were in the country legally who eventually became citizens. Heck, some of them served in the US military as non-citizens.

When borders are wide open there is no such thing as illegal aliens. They are now called "migrants" or "non-citizens".
