Welcome to the boards Kben! Excellent question. Old Testament salvation before Jesus was by believing in God the Father and making a blood sacrifice of animals for the remission of sins. That's why Jesus died on the cross...His blood sacrifice now atones for our sins, and because of that belief in Him now saves us:
"But Christ being come a high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us." ( Hebrews 9:11-12 KJV )
Everyone in the Old Testament who believed in God the Father ( as opposed to false gods ) and made their sacrifices as He instructed are saved. You might say that Old Testament saints 'looked forward' to the cross...we 'look backward' to the cross.

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. ( Revelation 1:8 KJV )
