Is this permanent or just a vacation?

If the former, I would choose Enlightenment era Europe, when knowledge and philosophy were cool and personal hygeine was less of an issue. If the latter, I think it wold be interesting to go back to the newborn Earth, before any humans lived on it- wander around in the unspoiled wilderness.

My thread, my rules! I like that!

I say that it can be as short or as long as you like. You can go as many places and times that you wish. The only catch is that if you die in the past, you will never be born! hmm...Be careful out there!

I would go back and visit some of my relatives who died before i was born...three in particular.

Gov. William Bradford (pilgrims) to thank him for having the courage to come over to the US.
Rufus and Mary Aldrich, John and Clarissa Bassett when they lived in PA. in the early 1800's to tie up some loose ends, meet the family, and see the early settlements there.
John Rogers who died for his faith in England. I'd like to assure him that his family survived.

Could one person do that? How would you do it?
Well, it's a moot point now. So I'll just discuss wishful thinking.

To stop the holocaust, I'd try to prevent Hitler's birth. Either by interrupting his parents from conceiving him, or kidnapping him as a baby and having him adopted by a Jewish family. And yes, it will then be said that if Hitler didn't do the holocaust, then someone else may have done it, which is why it's a moot point.

As for slavery, I guess this couldn't be stopped no matter what. Not by just one person at least. :(

I am picturing you breaking in while Hitler's Mom and Dad, oh, never mind, but that's kind of funny! :D

Slavery...Yes, it would be difficult to overcome the greed that drove that particular trade, and I don't know how you would do it either. Go to Africa and warn the tribal leaders? No, because some of them were involved in selling enemy captives into slavery. Talk to the slave traders? No, greed driving them. They would probably shoot you just for trying. The landowners? There was a culture of tolerance to the practice.

I think you would have to go back farther in time and bring progress to the African nations before the Europeans got it. But, who knows? This may result in people from Africa enslaving the Europeans!

So, in effect, you would have to change human nature, the selfishness and evil that we have towards one another. To have eradicated slavery, I think you would have to go back to the garden and stop Eve from taking that bite!:sigh:

I do appreciate the thought though. I appreciate the mindset of wanting to take action against evil. Something that we should all be doing in the present day. I think that there is still evil in the world that is equal to the holocaust and to slavery, but we are too content now, too unaffected by events that are not in our own personal worlds.

Three things i would do:

1. Go back to 1940 and join the Navy to become a Navy pilot.
2.Go back to 1970 and warn the shah of Iran about the upcoming revolution.
3. Take a springfield rifle and "take out" Hitler in 1933

You are about the same age as my son. I was wondering. Are you taking ROTC? My son is, and he loves it! He plans on going into the military when he graduates. I am scared to death at the thought, but I won't hold him back.

Im not in JROTC in high school, but i want to join NROTC(Navy ROTC) in college. I want to be a pilot in the Navy, so i would have to get a college degree first and also be commissioned as an officer.

My mom totally disagrees with me on doing anything in the military. She is really against the idea! That is good that you wont hold him back, and it seems that you are at-least supportive. :)

You are right! It is the JROTC!

How can I not be supportive of something so noble as our military? While it scares me to death to think of the danger he may face, I cannot in good concience try to sway him from such a high calling. It just wouldn't be right.

My son also wants to be a pilot, but his eyesight is so bad, we will have to get him laser surgery before he would be eligible.

Is it a requirement that you have to attend college to become a pilot? My son does not want to go to college first, but this would be good information to know.

To become a pilot in the Navy, you need to be commissioned as an Officer, which requires a minumum of a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university. Im sure the marines ad Airforce also require a baccalaureate degree. Im not sure about Army aviation. Im pretty sure they also require a baccalaureate degree.

What branch does your son want to join?

I don't know. I think the Air Force. Why do you like the Navy rather than one of the other branches?

"It is the function of the Navy to carry the war to the enemy so that it will not be fought on U.S. soil. "- Adm. Chester Nimitz

This quote sums it all up. Also, i like the idea of being out at sea, and the idea of adventure. Yes, the Air Force is a lot more comfortable, yet the Navy does not need a land base to operate out of,and it is capable of going to any hot spot around the world.

Cool. Well, God go with you. I think you are a brave young man and you seem to have a good head on your shoulders. Best wishes.

Hmmm....I would definately go back to Edinburgh but since my interests are from the mid 17th C right up until the 19th C I don't know to what point exactly.

But I'd like to meet Deacon Brodie, the man who influenced Stevenson to write Jekyll and Hyde. Brodie was the original Jekyll and Hyde. A well respected Deacon of the Wrights by day, but a thief by night. He was eventually caught and hanged on a new gallows which ironically he designed not long before his capture.

I'd like to meet Sir George McKenzie, on the most influential legal minds of his generation. He has a reputation as a ruthless religious persecutor and as a historian I think that description may not be completely accurate...I'd love to speak to him and hear what he says on things.

I'd love to go back to when the majority of Edinburgh's poor lived in the subterranean city underneath the Royal Mile. Vaults carved from volcanic rock 3 storeys below street level housed thousands of immigrants....they're open today to visitors but imagine what they would have been like...

I love old edinburgh.

I know another thing I would love to do if I was to go back in time to meet Annie Oakley! I would want to inspect her teeth if she has shovel back teeth(characteristic of Native American teeth). In one of the few photos of her where you can see her teeth, they look like Native teeth. I can just imagine, coming to Annie:
"Annie, can I look at your teeth?"
"My teeth?? What ever on earth for??" she'll laugh.
"Let me see if you have shovel back teeth"
"Shovel back teeth??? What is that???"
I would hestitate to tell her because no telling what she thinks about having Indian blood--being a product of the time period where many were ashamed of admitting Native blood.
"Just let me see your teeth for a minute??"
"Oh okay, but make it quick, I have to prepare for the show"
I'll look and sure enough, she has shovel back teeth! I go:
"YES!" delighted and grin and go my way.
Later, after the show-maybe the next day or so, Annie is sitting with just ladies in her tent. She's embroidering and had just finished offering the ladies tea. She would consider this conservation not proper if told around men.(Annie was a very proper victorian quaker lady) She tells of me wanting to see her teeth.
"For some peculiar reason, Lara wanted to look at my teeth! I don't know what on earth for! She said she wanted to see if I have 'shovel teeth or something like that"
"what an odd thing for her to do??"
Buffalo Bill happens to over hear the conversation from the tent nearby.
"Shovel teeth, well, Missie (Buffalo Bill called Annie Missie) I can tell you exactly what shovel back teeth is! It's injun teeth! Our little Cherokee was wanting to see if you're Indian!" He laughs.
Annie's cheeks turn a slight pink in reaction to Buffalo Bill overhearing and butting in on the conversation. She tactfully ignore Buffalo Bill's remark. She quickly turn the conversation elsewhere.
Later, after the ladies had left, she goes to find me in my tent......

I was in my tent, with the flap closed. I did not want anyone to know I was dressed 21st century--I couldn't stand having to wear that dumb ole corsett any longer. I had to get out of it--I got in my tie dye t-shirt and jeans. I made a quick trip back to the future with my laptop computer(that's how I would be able to go back in time--a laptop computer time machine!) just to get myself ice and cans of Dr. Pepper to fill up my ice chest that I kept hidden in my tent. Whenever the Buffalo Bill show moved on to the next town, I always quickly sent my modern stuff to the future, so the canvas and baggage storage men wouldn't see it and become suspicious. Then, in the next town, I would go back to the future to get my stuff--my ice chest, dr. Pepper, air mattress, etc. I did all of that in my tent--sometimes I spent too much time in the tent, or so people thought. The laptop made a laser like sphere surround me and my stuff that I wanted to transport in time. I could even be able to use the internet and listen to Sirius radio Folktown, thru time--but I made sure I used earplugs so people wouldn't hear the music. I just came back from 2005. Filled up my ice cooler with ice and Dr. Pepper, yoghurt, etc. All at once, I heard the bells jingle. I had hung a string of hippie camel bells on the outside of my door so people would jingle their presence--no way to knock on a tent canvas door! ;)
"Oh bummer!!" I whispered. "I'm in my modern hippie clothes! No time to change!"
"UH WHO is IT??" I cried nervously

Annie marched over to Lara's tent. She was angry.
"How dare she!" she thought. Annie's cheeks burned red from shame. She knew the story of how her father's people were mixed blooded. A Jewish great grandfather married an Indian girl. Rumors were, that there was even some black blood on the Indian side. It was tightly guarded and hiddened in the family. When asked where she had gotten her exotic dark features, Annie always did what she was told by her family. Tell them you're 'Black-Dutch'.
She remembered how when little and outside in the summer time, her mother made her cover up completely her arms, so they wouldn't tan. She received a whipping one time when she had forgottened in the excitement of finding caught quail in the quail traps. She rolled up her sleeves as she gathered the quail together to bring home. So excited at her first time catching quail in the traps that her very own hands had made, she made a dash back home with her sleeves rolled up and the quail in a gunny sack in her arms. She was only 6 at the time, and cute as a button.
Her mother had just finished hanging out the laundry. Seeing Annie, she snatched a switch off a nearby willow tree and proceeded to tan her hide. All excitement of her first quail hunt dissappeared and instead the stinging pain of her mother's lashes. Then, shame and then the tears flowed as she wept in the hay afterwards.

I hope yall don't mind me telling a little story! Or think that I'm hijacking the thread, etc. Just felt like telling a story--I've always wrote stories but never really shared them to people. Here's a link to the background on Annie Oakley that I shared(and photos) on another thread'--heroes, here in the history forum!
http://www.christianforums.com/t2084707-heros.html

Oh yeah, and the part about Annie's genealogy, I made up, but there is definitely a mixed ancestry that's hinted at from her niece who wrote a book about Annie, but doesn't outright say what in Annie's family background.

And I got the idea of Annie's mother telling her to cover up and punishing her for not doing so, from someone I met one time who told of her mother making her cover up so she wouldn't tan and show her Indian ancestry.

Lisa if your son joined the Navy it would still be possible for him to be on a flight crew as an enlisted sailor.
I served with an aviation squadron in the late 70's. Our flight crews were made up of 3 officers and 3 enlisted. Ours was an oceanic development squadron based out of Patuxent River, MD. and flew to Iceland, Spain, Japan, and other countries.
