bryne - i must have missed it too - what did you need help with??

Food...I only have $30 for spend on food for the next week...so I asked for some inexpensive meal ideas. I am kind of at a loss since my husband and daughter are so picky...so I was hoping that other people might have some ideas that I hadn't thought of.

QA - according to him, it was blasphemy because he was taking the Lord's name in vain, and because it was "mocking speaking in tongues" - that was his big beef.

I am pretty sure it was taking God's name in vain. I think the fact that he did use God's name in his routine in an obviously insincere way is what really bothered him. It is hard to figure out what he means sometimes. I guess I kind of get his point.

It was in the food thread...and right after I posted it, people started to talk about seafood and cajun food...so I think my post just got buried.

Anyhow...

Things my husband likes:

ground beef
pizza
fried chicken and chicken nuggets
ham, bacon and sausage
noodles, but gets tired of them
fried potatoes and mashed potatoes.
cheese
bread
eggs

Things he doesn't like:

non-ground beef...like steaks or roasts
chicken that isn't fried
pork
rice (he will eat it if he has to)
Potatoes that aren't fried or mashed
corn
most veggies (I sneak veggies into his meals)
any seafood

The difficulty with my daughter is that her tastes change almost daily, it seems. I never really know what she will like. I try to have things around that she will eat if she doesn't like what I made. So...I just make something, and hope she likes it...and try to have something on hand that she will eat if she doesn't like what I made.

For Bryne-

Pizza Bubbles

1 medium can pizza sauce
1 pound browned ground beef (or pepperoni, sausage etc....)
1 cup shredded cheese
1 can refrigerator biscuits cut into quarters (cheap ones are fine)

Mix together in large bowl. Grease a casserole dish. Bake uncovered at 350 for 10 minutes. Stir. Bake for 10 more minutes.

My awesome daughter-in-law came up with this one. Everyone loves it!

my sister makes this thing called "barbie cups" - i can't stand them (i don't honestly know why) but every single other person on the planet LOVES them - take a casserole dish, grease it, and take canned biscuits and put them in the bottom of the dish. don't really flatten them out, just put enough biscuits in to cover the bottom.

brown ground beef, and add BBQ sauce to it (whichever kind your family likes best) - put the beef/BBQ mixture over top of the biscuits - cover with shredded cheddar cheese, and bake at whatever temp the biscuit can calls for.

her whole family DEVOURS these - i don't really know why i don't like them.

i make a "poor man's stroganoff" that has white rice, ground beef, cream of mushroom soup, extra mushrooms, and sour cream - if that sounds like something they'll it, i'll give you the recipe for it (it's also super easy and SUPER cheap)

i'll think of some other things....

Well, Jerushabelle has been saying she is Lutheran and still holds membership in a Lutheran Church. Her last post on that thread in the ND forum shows that her view of Lutherans is from the ELCA point of view. She doesn't seem to like what the ELCA is doing and has lumped us all together.

Brown a pound of ground beef and drain. Make beef flavored Rice-a-Roni according to package directions, except during the last 5 minutes of simmering add the browned ground beef and a can of diced (or sliced) carrots. Yummmmmmmmmmm.

If the rice is an issue, you might be able to use beef flavored Noodle-roni instead.

That actually sounds kinda yummy. :yum:

LOL - i KNOW the "poor man's stroganoff" doesn't sound yummy to you - i'll have to make it without mushrooms, either that or make the mushrooms REALLY BIG so you can pick them out easier, LOLOL.....

and you know, the only thing i can think of as to WHY i don't like that "barbie cup" thing, is because the biscuits stay kinda doughy - and i just don't like that texture. maybe bake the biscuits a little bit first, and then put the goop on top - maybe that would work.....

and QA - i suppose that makes sense - she has all Lutherans lumped in with the elca, which is an obstacle Confessional Lutherans face on an almost daily basis.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. The poor man stroganoff sounds good...I would love the recipe.

I like the rice-a-roni idea a lot...and the pizza bubbles sound really good.

We do breakfast for dinner a lot...I am thinking I might do french toast for dinner one day this week.

bryne - i'm trying to get the exact measurements from my sister for the stroganoff recipe - but basically, it's this:

for a small family, i would do 2 cups minute rice/2 cups water

brown, crumble and drain a pound of burger
make the rice
add the burger to the rice
to the burger/rice combo, add in probably 2 cans cream of mushroom soup, and probably about 8 oz of sour cream (depending on how sloppy you like it)
add extra sliced button mushrooms if desired (i usually saute mine in butter and garlic salt)
heat through

it's a MAJOR comfort food - seriously - i was raised on this stuff, and it's so warm, and filling and stick to your ribs, we always make WAY too much so we can have it for several days afterward.....

Or maybe use fewer and roll them out a bit to make it thinner so it will bake thoroughly.

there's an idea.....hmmmm......i bet you could do the same thing and turn 'em into taco cups - taco seasoning to the beef, fiesta blend cheese, maybe sour cream added once they come out of the oven? hmmmm.....
