If God commanded you to kill someone, would you do it?

Just wondering.

And please don't say: "God would never ask me to do that"
Re-read the Old Testament if you need to.
I would not be able to do that. However, I do believe He could manipulate my mentality to achieve this effect, if He required to.

I must apologize in advance, Alex, but I'm going to claim that this particular patchwork 'stunt' of seeming logic really 'begs the question.'

We as Christians are now in the New Covenant era; why in the world would we EVER expect God to show up and ask us to kill another person after everything Jesus went through (and said) to get us to be the kind of people that handled things in a way that Jesus specifically would have handled them. The most we might be expected to do as Christians is overturn some tables...

The actual question that may be asked, now that we are under the auspices of Jesus Christ specifically, is: If Jesus asked you to kill someone, would you do it? And .....of course.....the answer would be, "NO!" WHY? For the simple fact that, as the lives of the Apostles already demonstrated to the church, and to the rest of the world by the way, Jesus would never ask us to do that as a representation of His NEW COVENANT. New wine, for new wine skins....

.....Peace

What 2PhilVoid said. We are under the message of Jesus, which says to Love God and Love your neighbor as yourself, to not judge but let God do it. I don't think I can kill a person, if that person is doing great evil, I will try my best to stop it, but trust the judgement on God.

I'm plenty familiar with the Old Testament. God as presented in the Old Testament is not so capricious and petty as to ask me to kill someone.

So my answer is no, if "God" asked me to kill someone I would not do it.

How about if your country asked you to kill someone (or multiple people) would you do it?

How are you so sure the God of the old testament wouldn't ask you to kill for him?

He commanded Abraham to kill his own son. He commanded Moses, Joshua, and his armies to kill all sorts of evil people like the Midianities and Philistines and what not. In fact, his word commands his people to kill witches, homosexuals, fortunetellers, adulterers, nonbelievers, false prophets, and so on.

"Then I heard the LORD say to the other men, "Follow him through the city and kill everyone whose forehead is not marked. Show no mercy; have no pity! Kill them all – old and young, girls and women and little children. But do not touch anyone with the mark. Begin your task right here at the Temple." So they began by killing the seventy leaders. "Defile the Temple!" the LORD commanded. "Fill its courtyards with the bodies of those you kill! Go!" So they went throughout the city and did as they were told."

"Go up, my warriors, against the land of Merathaim and against the people of Pekod. Yes, march against Babylon, the land of rebels, a land that I will judge! Pursue, kill, and completely destroy them, as I have commanded you," says the LORD. "Let the battle cry be heard in the land, a shout of great destruction".

He told them, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Strap on your swords! Go back and forth from one end of the camp to the other, killing even your brothers, friends, and neighbors."

This was a commandment already present while God was commanding others to kill for him. How is this a valid point?

He told them, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Strap on your swords! Go back and forth from one end of the camp to the other, killing even your brothers, friends, and neighbors."

"in a way that Jesus specifically would have handled them"? Jesus is the same God from the Old Testament. He commanded Abraham to kill his own son. I don't understand how bringing up Jesus is a valid argument. Isn't he the same God that said: "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Strap on your swords! Go back and forth from one end of the camp to the other, killing even your brothers, friends, and neighbors."

...Y'now, you're right. I didn't think of that. Thanks for the reminder. I always wondered why the Apostles killed other Christians each and every time they sinned...

I would have no problem being the instrument of Holy Righteousness to carry out the will of my Lord and Savior for the glory of his Holy being.

Here's to hoping you never suffer from schizophrenia.

I'm just saying, you are obviously leaving some parts of what Jesus said out. Sure the Bible says he said to love your neighbors and other instances he tells people to kill their neighbors. Y'now?

So, in your estimation, of the two quotes I've placed below, which is more like the quote you've cited?

a) "An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth."

b) "But I say to you, do not resist him who is evil: but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also."

How are you so sure the God of the old testament wouldn't ask you to kill for him?

Because that isn't who He is. The God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob, the God who delivered the Israelites out from Egypt, who returned them from Captivity is the same God who has entered into human history in the person of Jesus Christ, who commands me to repay no evil with evil, but to do good to all, to love even my worst enemy, and to treat all people with mercy, kindness, and compassion.

He commanded Abraham to kill his own son.

With no intent of letting Abraham go through the act.

He commanded Moses, Joshua, and his armies to kill all sorts of evil people like the Midianities and Philistines and what not.

Military generals acting in military campaigns. Also a far more complex topic in general if one wants to get into the ugliness of Joshua's campaigns in Canaan.

In fact, his word commands his people to kill witches, homosexuals, fortunetellers, adulterers, nonbelievers, false prophets, and so on.

Commands of order to be followed as part of a system of civil obedience for the ancient Israelites exclusive to them, as they alone were given Torah.

You found Scripture where God commands killing. Good for you.

None of this, of course, changes what I said.

I didn't make an estimation. That is what Jesus (God) said. It's clearly written in the Bible.

In one instance, he says to love your neighbor and in the other he says to kill him. He seems like a very wishy-washy God if he can't make up his mind.

Re-read the Old Testament if you need to.

We don't live in the Old Testament. We live here and now.

We also don't receive extra-Biblical revelation from God.

God has given us three circumstances where it is permissible to kill someone: self-defense, capital punishment, and war.
