In its current form for Catholics, the bible is about two thousand. I suppose the Old Testament without the deuterocanicals was mostly all composed by sometime after the re-dedication of Jerusalem. Traditional sources state that the Torah was written by Moses maybe around 1250 BC, but if you want to go with a 586 BC as many scholars do, that is fine. 2500 years of Biblical influence will suffice to properly answer the question posed to you. Abraham and the patriarchs dealing with God directly pushes the story back even further too, if the oral history that went into Biblical composition is included. The Bible hasn't existed for 5000 years. Regardless, it is not by any means clear that humanity has been markedly improved over the last five millenia. Is humanity worse off? No. It is fundamentally unchanged, though. And if Scripture is anything to go by, humanity is going to worsen or throw off present restraints in its pursuit of wickedness.
Selah.
Now, if you read my first posts carefully enough, I am pretty sure that you would find that I have already stated that human nature has not changed a whit since Biblical times. We are not disagreeing on the human propensity for evil therefore.
But my question still remains. If the word of God has had absolutely no effect on people who have consumed it, why even bother reading it? Why bother being a Christian at all, if all that is produced in terms of fruit is the same lemons that was there from the start?
In terms of your own analysis of history, I think that Steve Pinker offers an interesting counter point.
And in terms of abortion, this is a monstrosity. The fifth column of "Christians" who had me take down my pro-life signature here in CF forums are children of Satan, as far as I am concerned. Killing the unborn in the name of the Holy Spirit of Christ is a blasphemy against the HS.
I suppose I have been banned and censured enough at CF for my stance on abortion, and what I think of pro-choice "Christians", so I probably shouldn't digress into that topic. I am glad that you are taking the stand that you do though. Abortion really is a bigger blasphemy than Moloch.
