in layman's terms what is this evidence you say that show the common ancestry?

Evidence that shows various characteristics have been inherited from the same ancestor.

For example, if you meet three brothers who all have freckles, blue eyes and red hair, and you discover their father also has freckles, blue eyes and red hair, the most likely probability is that the brothers all inherited those characteristics from their father. If you take blood samples and do a DNA analysis on all four, you will expect to find the same genetic sequencing in genes which govern hair, skin and eye pigmentation.

You can do a similar analysis with species. In addition, though the DNA analysis is missing, you can also do a morphological comparison of fossil species to living species and to other fossil species, and so place them in a lineage as well.

Interestingly, the geographical placement of species (including fossil species) is still another line of evidence that matches physical, genetic and fossil evidence.

It is not possible to be more specific without getting into case studies. No one case study is likely to be conclusive, but when hundreds of case studies lead to the same conclusion, the conclusion looks more and more probable.

Frankly I still have no clue what this common ancestry is.

Do you mean the definition or specific instances?
