• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm really more sad about the prospect of breaking my rock....
I admit that this rock has been around since long before there were any humans interested in breaking it, but console yourself with the fact that you're doing this for science. Kind of.

What if I find a similar rock, and break it apart? Also, I don't have a geology hammer. Just a normal one. And a bigger normal one.

You don't need a rock hammer. You will likely mar a regular hammer a bit, but that does not mean that you can't use them.

I'll post pics when I get back up there, find a similar rock, and crack it apart.

Cool, and if possible as accurate of a location on a topographic map would help. I assume that this is not in your own backyard so you would not be giving out personal information.

I'll see what I can do.

I found a rock...

Can somebody explain why this rock looks this way? Frankly, I find it suspicious. And to keep this relevant to the C&E section, I'd like the young earthers to take a go at this as well.

A guess based on the two images:
A weakly metamorphosed rock with two perpendicular joints and were filled by hydrothermal deposit.

If you just want an one word name, then "quartzite" is not a bad one.

They are quartz veins but other than that I have no idea about it. I don't know how that stuff forms either.

It was probably either a sandstone or an igneous rock (can not see clearly on the images. I bet it was a sandstone). It was compressed tectonically and the criss cross fractures were made. Then hot watery solution invaded into the fracture and solidified.

Not too complicated.

Our first young earth explanation!

In fact, according to the current geological model, this rock could be made from loose sand in a few millions of years. It does not have to be old.

How dare you.....

Well, then I take it back.
IF you are a good artist, then you may make it worth, say, $500.
But, I warn you, this rock is super hard. So, wear your goggles when chip it.
