I don't know anything about icons being prayed to... Jesus Christ did not become paint and wood in order to trample down death by death, He became flesh, so if you know anyone who's praying to icons, give them a good smack because they shouldn't do that.

But our Lord, by becoming an incarnate person, has therefore allowed us to depict His image in the flesh. When we kiss an icon, we are showing reverence for the one depicted through it. The icon itself can't help us or save us or do anything but sit there on its little stand.

As a proof of our reverential acts shown to icons passing over to the prototype, our Lord has chosen to work miracles through icons. The icon is not working any miracle, it is our Lord alone, using the icon for His grace to manifest.

Wow, Matrona. You just answered questions I didn't even know I had! ;)
Glad I could help, Momzilla. :)

I know how confusing all these things can be... but believe me, once I wrapped my brain around all the things surrounding the Trinity and the Natures of Christ, everything else seemed easy. :)

I should clarify that icons will occasionally appear to do a lot of things--cry, bleed, move, whatever. But God is actually the one moving them, making them cry or bleed, etc. The icon itself can't do anything but sit there. It can't do anything under its own power.

Have you ever noticed that the facial features of icons generally follow the icons of Our Lord? In other words, compare the icon of St. Columba to an icon of Jesus. The facial features often "line up", although St. Columba will look totally and completely like himself.....I believe this is the meaning of "putting on Christ." The saints have, in their lives, made a practical application of the Gospel to their lives, and in effect, have "imitated Christ". This is what we are supposed to do and these Saints are our human role models. My thoughts anyway!

My dad talked to an Iconographer recently and he said that same thing. That Saints are areflection of Christ so they look a lot like him.

I don't know if this is the experience of all, but after you've been married for a while, you start to look like your spouse (I think the same can be said about people and their pets :D). As you spend a long time with someone, you start to unconciously pick up their mannerisms, gestures, facial expressions, etc.

Even though my wife and I look nothing alike and have very different characters, people have often commented how much alike we are :)

Could someone please tell me what the bible says about icons that are prayed to and claimed to heal, move, cry, bleed etc.

A good book to read is Jim Forest's "Praying with Icons" (notice with not to)

Also a simple tract on Icons is available at orthotracts.org

Peace,
Dismas

I may have posted this here someplace, but there is a site where you can compare the shroud (which our protestant friends adore) and the icon of Christ (one of the oldest) found at St. Catherine's Monestary on Mt. Sinai.
