isn't there a rule about facing east?
I find it interesting that of the three iconographers on this forum, only one is being so vocal about this issue. I know of seminarians and priests that approve of the process that Intercisus is suggesting.
Frankly I think this is a matter that should be left for one's Spiritual Father to decide.
i made the cross out of some Sculpey clay, and painted it based on this design: http://www.ocf.org/OrthodoxPage/icons/clip/cross.gif
The digital age has made it very easy to reproduce most anything from music to term papers to icons and as Michael points out this is not necessarily a good thing.
Not only do we potentially deprive the iconographer from their proper credit and monetary compensation we are also setting ourselves up to create something disposable. Icons are meant to be permanent, they are supposed to be blessed in a Church for 40 days and then they should be cherished forevermore. When we print our own icons we are making it easy to get ourselves into trouble, I know this because I've done it.
When I left for college I didn't bring any icons with me. It didn't take long for me to feel like something was missing and I printed an icon off the goarch website. It did actually travel with me all four years of college but by the time I moved out I have no idea what happened to it- I may have even thrown it out and I regret it. I'm sure most people will do a better job of taking care of their icons than I did and there are certainly plenty of "paper" icons out there (cardboard handouts at church, icons calendars, Parish weekly bulletins) so I'm no one to say there is anything wrong with it. But we really need to be mindful of the intention of Icons and work to stay faithful to that....
Well I've been listening to you for the last two years I was bound to learn something! You said that alot more well than I could have!
Well I've been listening to you for the last two years I was bound to learn something!
But really I think it makes a lot of sense. Honestly we live in such a disposable culture that even though it's a simple concept I think it's actually kind of hard for many people...
I am actually alot more understanding than I present myself as being on here, atleast when it comes to people. To a degree. What really drives me nuts is when people spend several hundred dollars at one time on icon prints so that they can have many, many mounted prints when for the same money they could have one hand written icon. The same thing really, really drives me nuts when Churches do that.
Or people that have a $1000 TV and a $10 icon corner....
If you are referring to my 65 inch DLP TV and surround sound system, I will quickly referr you to my icon room which is chalk full of hand written icons, including one of yours!![]()
The icons from Skete.com are some of the best mounted icons I've ever seen. Many iconographers don't even provide the service because it's just too tedious and cash consuming.
Have no fear, I was not referring to you at all, just trying to give some idea of our priorities. For about the same price as a low end TV, one could have a hand painted icon. One is a window onto the world, one is a window onto heaven. This is not to say that everyone can afford a hand-painted icon, but how we spend our money is often an indication of our priorities.
Hey michael. What do you think of having maybe one hand written icon of Christ, and then other "prints" to go beside it?
Also, does anyone ever play chants over a speaker while praying? Dont laugh if this is a dumb question![]()
