  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I'm probably going a little beyond the original scope of this thread.

My understanding is that Earth has been going through glacial cycles for millions of years (unless you believe that our planet is only a few thousand years old). During this huge expanse of time, Earth had been through many periods of warming and cooling.

In more “modern” times, different scientists have examined the geological record and have noted the existence of these cycles and that there seemed be some sort of logic to these cycles. One of the first scientists to make a sophisticated analysis was the Serbian geophysicist Milutin Milanković. The results of his analysis are called the Milankovitch cycles.

Although sometimes criticized by today’s standards, his analysis was an incredible accomplishment in the pre-computer age and has a great deal of merit.

And, there are undoubtedly other theories to account for the cyclical nature of the ice ages.

This is not meant to make light of the problem of the greenhouse effect. On the contrary, this is a very big deal. However, there are good reasons to believe that the melting of the ice caps is part of glacial cycles that have been going on for millions of years.

Unfortunately, numerous manmade pollutants seem to be speeding up the process are only making the problem worse.

OOPS!
I was referring to Mars, not Earth.
Sorry.
Huh? MARS!
My understanding of Mars is that they are consantly 'melting' (I'll explain the ' ' shortly) in a seasonal cycle. Winter comes and that cap freezes over, summer and it 'melts' away. 'Melt' is actually inaccurate as to knowledge a large portion of the caps during winter is frozen CO2 which when heated sublimes straight into gas (no liquid form) - there is some ice underneath but I have not heard anything of it melting (I don't know the temperatre rnges that the poles can be exposed to though - the melting at best would be extremely small though)

Next time
A. be more specific, people will always assume you are talking about Earth unless it is quite obvious that another planet is being discussed
B. Cite where you get your data from, no one needs citation of data about Earth ice caps melting (as I said in my earlier post, you would have to be living under a rock not to know) but MARS is a whole different story - to obscure even for people interested in space to be EXPECTED to know (hope? yes, expect? no)
